Hi all.

Received this in post (first class)

I have omitted dates and identifying features for obvious reasons, but the date of the offence is over 14 days ago. This is including the date of offence.

Having read information online, am I right in thinking that they have 14 days in which to issue this?

My address with the DVLA (DVSA?) has remained unchanged for the past 25 years.
I have not recently changed car.
I get all my post to my address from DVLA no problems, mot/tax etc.
There have been no postal/rail strikes in my area and there has been no extreme weather. Unless 20ºC sunshine is classed as extreme now...

Any advice would be appreciated please.

Thanks

Ok, ticking the 'road legal' box unfortunately doesn't make it so or provide a defence indeed. The retailer may have disappeared for a reason...

My recommendation remains, go to a reputable national company like halfords with your V5C and get new plates fitted, for a standard plate it's something like £12-£15.

Or just double check it yourself before fitting? The requirements are hardly onerous, and even so, if you have the letters correctly spaced, in the correct font, without any chavvy logos and on the correct position on your car then you are probably lottery ticket territory if you are pulled for it.

Even if I bought it from Halfords (in fact especially if I bought it from Halfords) I would double check it anyway.

I PM'ed the OP a few days ago and offered to take a look at his plates if he sends me pics. Not had a reply yet.

I've seen the OP's plate, the spacing means he's banged to rights.

Somewhere I have a photo of a mis-spaced Halfords plate (no extra spacing between the year identifier group and the following letters). They cannot hide when they have to put their name on it...

Hi all

Just a quick update on this:

After getting some fantastic advice and support from a certain Pepipoo user - (CP8759) - I challenged the decision and here's a very brief timeline of what happened:

I initially went back to the Penalty Unit to ask why this particular course of action was taken - when other schemes such as the VDRS were available. I was politely told to go away and cough up or see you in court. I paid.
I learned that as a matter of public law, I am entitled to know the reasons for a decision made by a public authority that impacts me. Since I was not given that from the Penalty Unit - I sent a letter to the force HQ.
I was not expecting what happened next, I was merely hoping that the reasoning of the officer was manifestly wrong so I could challenge (unlikely).
A few weeks later I received a letter from an Inspector at the force concerned, who refunded the money in full.

I hope that this helps another person in the same situation, but I imagine these are taken on a case by case basis. I had no previous driving offences and I evidenced previous good character, which I believe helped. Additionally, my spacing was nigh on 3mm out, which I also believe fought in my corner. So hats off to the c..opper who managed to see a 3mm deficit from however far away without a tape measure.

I would just like to say thanks again for all replies and input, especially from CP, who made this possible. As a thank you I will be donating a part of this refund to a charity of CP's choosing.

Thanks again all!
