Hi All - I've posted about this before on a Speeding thread about the M3 but I can't see any current ones.

Last Monday I came across this sequence going from the M25 anti-clockwise onto the M3 at junction 12.

M25 - Variable Speed Limit 50

M3 - Fixed National Speed Limit Sign

M3 - Variable Speed Limit 40

M3 - Blank Gantry/Side of the Carriageway Sign (Can't remember which)

M3 - Variable Speed Limit 40

3 points here:

- It seems ridiculous to have a fixed NSL sign when there are many gantries/signs to display whatever limit is appropriate

- I am confused by blank gantries/signs, theoretically they should show an NSL sign but what happens when there's a sequence of blank ones (as has happened before)?

- The mix of gantries and side of carriageway signs is strange, especially when the side of carriageway ones are blank as (to the point above), does that denote NSL?

I'm pretty sure I didn't get caught but the traffic was doing all sorts of speeds due to the above, ranging from 40 to 70+. I don't feel safe doing 40 when, especially trucks, are coming up very fast from behind as no-one seems to know the limit.

Please can someone provide clarity as I'll be doing this journey multiple times over the next few weeks.

AFAIK a side-of carriageway matrix sign can only display an advisory limit. Also, a blank sign has no significance.

I am pretty sure that going onto the M3 from the M25 that you will pass a fixed 50 mph sign after you have gone past the junction to go either east/west. That junction southbound M3 is 50 mph until all lanes have merged and the NSL sign is about half a mile further along the M3

There is a gantry on the slip that can give mandatory speed limits, but these are mormally for those heading up to London as the 50 mph fixed sign will then come into force until the NSL further along

Agreed. Mandatory 50 mph, enforced by SPECS average speed cameras, from the M25 slip until well onto the M3. There are no other gantries or side of carriageway signs until well into the NSL.
