Seems NSW, Australia is rolling out mobile-phone-while-driving cameras.
Apparently, they take 2 photos of every vehicle, use AI to look for a mobile phone either being held to the head or used in a lap. If human review concurs, cue points and a ~£180 fine.
Or take it to court and prove on the balance of probability that the object in question was not a mobile telephone.
None of this trying to detect phone use by radiowave emissions.
I suppose it should bolster the trade in skin-tone phone cases.
And I'm sure they've already thought of the LHD vehicle and passenger using a phone.
I just wonder how quickly it'll catch on elsewhere.

If we do bring in new cameras, can I suggest "foglights on when it hasn't been foggy for 3 days" cameras and "only got 1 headlight working so I'll put my front fogs on instead" cameras too?

And "My lights blind everyone else" cameras please.

If those trials in Oz work out, expect similar here.
And a proliferation in Phone Awareness Courses.

AIUI the Australian legal system is based on the fundamental principles of our legal system (before they were eroded) - in which case the prosecution would need to prove their case beyond any reasonable doubt.
