Here's the launch PR:

PR444: Safe Speed launches official 'Scrap Speed Cameras' petition

news: for immediate release

On the same day that Department for Transport announced an increase in road
deaths, Safe Speed has launched a 10 Downing Street petition to scrap speed
cameras in the interests of road safety.

Safe Speed has a cast iron case against speed cameras:

* The benefit claimed for speed cameras has been overrated by 400% due to
neglect of regression to the mean effect at speed camera sites.

* The claimed speed / accident relationship based on average speeds is
basically complete drivel.

* Only 5% of injury crashes involve ANY 'speeding' vehicle - and that INCLUDES
crashes caused by rogue drivers, nutters racing on the highway, reckless
drivers, stolen cars, emergency services drivers and drunk drivers.

* Speed cameras come with at least 30 detrimental side effects, none of which
have been officially studied.

* Vehicle activated signs are more effective than speed cameras at reducing
vehicle speeds in dangerous locations.

* We earned ourselves the safest roads in the world long before we had speed
cameras, but since we've had speed cameras we have been losing our world lead.

* Road deaths are not falling as expected.

* Road crash hospitalisations haven't fallen for a decade according to the
British Medical Journal.

* If it wasn't for a sustained and ongoing reduction in pedestrian activity the
road safety results would be considerably worse.

* The Statistics Commission has warned Department for Transport that their
'serious injury' statistics are not a reliable series - and that's the only
category showing an improvement.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "I urge everyone to sign this petition for one
reason and for one reason only - because speed cameras are detrimental to road
safety."

"A proper examination of the case leaves absolutely no doubt that speed cameras
have made road safety worse."

<ends>

This launched at 5:22 yesterday afternoon and is already a 'rising star' with 1,359 signatures, ranked 72 out of 2,871 Downing Street Petitions.

In "Transport and Infrastructure" it's already rated 10 out of 421.

Earlier this afternoon Safe Speed issued the following PR:

PR446: Scrap Speed Cameras petition is rising star

news: for immediate release

Since its launch less than two days ago the Safe Speed official petition to
scrap speed cameras has gathered over 2,000 signatures to become a 'rising
star' on the Downing Street web site.

It's already ranked 50 out of 2,869 Downing Street petitions, having overtaken
over 2,800 other petitions in less than two days. In the 'Transport and
Infrastructure' group, amazingly, it is ranked 8 out of 421.

See: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/scrapcam

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "Drivers know that speed cameras are the wrong
policy and don't make the roads safer. If fact we even know that speed cameras
make us into worse drivers. Why the DfT doesn't know this is anyone's guess,
but this is our chance to tell them."

"We earned ourselves he safest roads in the world long before we had speed
cameras. Since cameras, we're falling back fast. We have to get back to the
policies that gave us the safest roads in the world in the first place;
policies that value skills and attitudes."

"I urge every driver to sign the petition. We have to force Department for
Transport to treat us with respect and value our skills."

<ends>

Since then it's continued to grow very nicely and now has 2,353 signatures and ranks 43rd overall out of 2,869 petitions.

In the 'Transport and Infrastructure' group it ranks 6th out of 421.

And all this in Under two days.

Thanks for your help, and keep spreading the word folks.

It's ranked 4th in Transport and 34th overall.

But it's slowing and urgently need a big push.

Please sign it NOW if you haven't already.

Now ranked 18th overall (out of 2,940)

And ranked 2nd in Transport (out of 433)

With 6,235 signatures since Thursday afternoon last.

That's an absolutely amazing start, many thanks to all signers.

Is anyone actually reading this thread? I'm getting the feeling that I'm talking to myself in an empty room. smile.gif

Is it in the right place?

We really do need more signatures, despite the fact that we have hit 7,000 in about 5 days.

I've signed it.

I'll also tell the guys at work about it. I work in the news room at a local radio station (I'm the IT bod there), they have run recent stories on the Specs cameras so they may be interested in doing something about it (can't promise anything but it's surely worth a try). I've also had a call from the local newspaper about my ongoing NIP, can't hurt to give her a bell to let her know about this too.

Edit: I've e-mailed the details to one of the news guys who is into his cars. I'm sure he would be interested in it (not to mention he is based near the Devon & Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership).

Rob
