Some of you may know that the ELEZ is expanding to the whole of Greater London.

This has been extremely controversial to say the least. 1000's of people will be affected and including many trades people who drive vans.

I have been told that a lot of Euro 5 diesel vehicles do meet the ULEZ spec for emissions but because they are not Euro 6, they are deemed non compliant.

There have also been some retrofit kits which lower emissions to virtually zero but these are not recognised by TFL.

How would one go about getting TFL to recognise that these vehicles which are not EURO 6 but do meet the standards of emission are in fact compliant?

If it is all about pollution and peoples health, then stop all polluting vehicles from entering the area ! Not just stop those who can't afford to pay for it and allow those who can to continue to pollute !

I meant workable solutions.

He's right in the sense that we tolerate harm essentially in the name of money, convenience and inertia. It took about 15 years to ban lead in petrol despite the dangers being indisputable. However, I get the impression that he doesn't favour an outright ban but no action.

One of the problems with the ULEZ expansion is that especially with commercial vehicles, there simply are not enough compliant vehicles on the market. i understand that in the expanded zone there could be around 300,000 non compliant cars and vans, so even if one wanted to buy a newer car or van, they are just not available.

Well, according to the RAC a FOI request to the DVLA reveals that there are currently 691,559 non-compliant cars within the ULEZ and if you add other vehicles that total becomes 851,065. This of course does not consider those vehicles on the edge of the zone whose owners are required to enter it for work etc.

Yes but they also say more than 90% of vehicles are compliant. The percentage of compliant vehicles in the current zone is nearly 95%. If the number of non-compliant vehicles looks large it shows that we have too many cars although most sit on driveways or kerbsides and do nothing most of the time.

Neglecting the figures of ownership within the ULEZ, in the year 2021/22, TFL issued 1,010,573 PCNs for ULEZ infractions.
Which seems to be a lot of people who didn't get the memo and there would be significantly more who did and paid the daily fee

You'd expect a lot of PCNs in the first year of a greatly expanded zone, and many of these are probably multiples for the same car. It's already one of the world's largest such zones.

If we gave you the job of setting limits for nitrogen oxides and particulates what would you set? Or would you scrap them?

I would introduce a graduated scheme to stop, not charge, the worst offending vehicles entering the zone and lesser polluting vehicles over a time scale. therefore giving vehicle owners a more realistic timescale to replace their vehicles and not merely charge them for the privilege of polluting the somewhat exorbitantly enlarged London area

Haven't a clue what that means.

No I don't understand your plan. List it out with a timeframe and actions.

I'm to busy trying to arrange more work to pay for a new van, which wasn't the plan, as a pensioner, in my semi retired position trying to subsidise the rubbish state pension.
