Hi all,
Please excuse me what I may or may not know. I just need to know what speed limit a particular road is without speed signs... I know it sounds silly already. I'm coming off the Birmingham Road A4177 (which is a 40mph) then joining the A46 Warwick Bypass which has no speed signs displayed as I join the dual carriageway. There is a central reservation, no speed limit signs till you get the end of the A46 Warwick Bypass where there is a 40mph displayed going through the roundabout. There are no repeater speed signs, just no stopping signs displayed. Is this section of the A46 a 70mph? This post has been edited by clattered image: Sat, 17 Oct 2020 - 10:44 |

I would say yes, it is an NSL dual carriageway. The A4177 and the roundabout above the A46 are clearly under a 40 MPH limit, in fact when you leave the A46 to join the roundabout there are clear 40 MPH terminal signs, which indicates a speed limit change.. What does seem to be missing are NSL signs on the slip roads from the roundabout down to the A46. There are no streetlights on this section of the A46 so it cannot be a restricted road with a 30 MPH limit. Might be worth pointing out the lack of NSL signs to Highways England.

Yes. If GSV is correct there does appear to be NSL signs missing but without any 40mph repeaters you can assume the limit no longer holds as it’s a dual carriageway.

I thought I was doing 30mph over the limit at one point. But merging on the slip road, traffic was flowing 50mph-60mph plus albeit hardly none. Obviously we're not to ever go by other drivers speeds, but genuinely thought I'd made a blunder. Yes. If GSV is correct there does appear to be NSL signs missing but without any 40mph repeaters you can assume the limit no longer holds as it’s a dual carriageway. Sorry? What is GSV. Yes. Oh.
The example you show is when exiting a dual carriageway I expected to see one when entering one. Just a get a bit of anxiety from me with this. |

The example you show is when exiting a dual carriageway I expected to see one when entering one. The NSL sign is used when leaving a defined limit, e.g. 30/40/50. Yes, there should be one really. -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

If the limit on the roundabout were a 30 limit then theoretically NSL terminal signs are not needed, as the lack of street lights is legally sufficient (if only barely) to tell you the road is no longer a restricted road. However as the 40 limit is a section 84(1) limit indicated by signs, there really should be terminal NSL signs telling you you're leaving the 40 mph limit.
I have been battling with HE with similar issues around my neck of the woods for years, you will likely need to raise a formal complaint and go up a couple grades of management before anyone who knows what they're talking about will pay any attention. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

I get what you mean.. its showing the change in speed limit. I'm with you... its confusing for me as going the opposite direction of the same route there is NSL sign as you enter the dual carriage way (near the M40 roundabout) and of course the 40 speed sign on the Birmingham roundabout I am talking about. It's good to know I (just about lol) have an understanding of our roads. Maybe they do this for folks to drive slower thinking its a 40? Or in your case a 30. |

No, it's cos the people who are meant to be in charge of such things don't know the regulations. If HE pushes back, feel free to PM me, my compliant was eventually upheld by the regional director of Highways England and I can supply you a copy if need be. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php
