CP+ hospital parking story but could apply anywhere

When using a credit card to check in and check out again, the company charges for a whole day then refunds what isn't used
There can be a delay before the excess returns to the account

I recall a similar complaint about ASDA petrol stations a few months ago
My local Tesco authorises £99 when I pay at the pump but don't know if the payment actually leaves the account

Far fetched but what in theory prevents a company adding a £100 holding charge as a deposit against breaches of terms and conditions?

If an amount is authorised it doesn’t leave your account but will count against your credit limit (if you’re close that may matter) for a while, in some cases it can sit there for a few days as the final transaction doesn’t always cancel the authorised amount.

Once I had to phone a company to ‘deauthorise’ a deposit as it was held for nearly a week and I needed all the available credit.
Ironically it was a motorbike shop where I bought the bike for which the authorisation was the deposit!
