If you've not seen it yet or just want to again, lots of bright ones at a civilised hour, after a
quiet couple of months.

Figs are for London: Adjust for your location. (top right).

Even better, download Astropanel to your phone & you get a clear sky forecast & a countdown to when it will appear, along with a pointer for the correct direction to look.
It also tells you when there's Iridium flares too.

Unhappily the Iridium satellites are being decommissioned at present. Watch the flares while you can!

These are the original Iridium constellation satellites, of course. The next generation satellites are being launched to replace them, so there'll be more fireworks in 20 years or so!

I need to get out less, I thought they contained irridium and the flare was them burning up as they de-orbit blush.gif
sort of a mini re-enactment of the KT extinction event without the extinction part, to confuse future atcheologists biggrin.gif

I still have the spaceweather dot com app working on my ipone4 which also lists local times, magnitudes & directions and shows a little picture of the satellite.

Now spaceweather is workng, it seems to direct me to the heavens above page anyway.

I have often been out ISS spotting, in particular on Christmas Eve with the grandbrats!

However, I don't know what I am looking for in an iridium flare. Could someone help, please?

As has been mentioned, they are becoming a thing of the past as the old satellites are replaced.
