Hi. I've received a £250 (!!) fine for driving through London when I was diverted off both directions of the M25. I had no idea the Low Emission Zone existed. I don't remember entering it either. Apparently there are big signs but how you're supposed to read those when you're also dealing with London traffic and roads plus kids in the vehicle...? I don't have £250 to pay it (who does?). It just seems such a high figure to pay. Anybody else had this fine? Any advice? My 28 days to appeal are nearly up supposed I need to act ASAP. ..Thank you!

Theres not usually much you can fight these on. If the diversion had no other option you might have a chance post the PCN here
And give us some detail about the road closure on the M25 -------------------- All advice is given freely. It is given without guarantee and responsibility for its use rests with the user

What were you driving? You had kids on board, but the LEZ does not affect cars, a minibus perhaps?

If you can't cope with normal distractions (kids), should you be diving?

Who issued it and exactly what is it?

Hi. I've received a £250 (!!) fine for driving through London when I was diverted off both directions of the M25. Are you sure you were diverted in the LEZ with no option to avoid? If that were the case i'd have thought there would have been 1000s of cases like yours in the recent press. -------------------- |

I don't think any part of the LEZ is within 8+ miles of the M25, probably more.
More details needed and several questions have been asked. -------------------- |

If you can't cope with normal distractions (kids), should you be diving? Fortunately, I was driving and not diving. Hi again. Thanks for all taking the time to reply. The vehicle is an old transit van. Partially converted into a camper but still listed as a panel van until conversion complete. We were on our way to Dover (for a ferry) from the Midlands. My sat nav originally had me going southbound on the M25 but there was ano accident causing a long delay so the sat nav re-routed me Northbound only to find there was a delay that way too so instead it rerouted me through the centre. I'm not from London and had no idea about the rehearsal LEZ. Since getting the fine I've been researching it so now know but there is very little national awareness from research I've done. £250 seems like a crazy amount of money for something I had no idea I was doing wrong! The letter says after 14 days the fine would be doubled and I have 28 days to appeal. Will do that onine tomorrow - but what do I say? Thanks again ! |

When was the van registered as new. The charge for driving in the zone is at least £100 for a non-compliant vehicle so maybe paying £250 isn't so bad.

Will do that onine tomorrow - but what do I say? You have no good defence. You obviously missed all the prominent signage and were directed by your Sat Nav, not the police or any other authority. Write and appeal asking for discretion - facts as you wrote in your last post. Don't hold out much hope and fully expect to have to pay. -------------------- |

I had other advice saying to completely ignore it and if it comes to Bailiffs to ignore them? That sounds scary :-/ But I don't have enough money to pay either. Should I write an appeal or ignore it? |

The debt won't go away. If you don't pay the bailiffs will come knocking. They can seize any of your goods, including vehicles, which will be sold to satisfy the much increased debt. Their costs can easily double the original amount owed. You need to pay it before the debt escalates. This post has been edited by peterguk: Sun, 22 Jul 2018 - 23:35 -------------------- |
