Hi all, first time poster but long time reader of the forum
So my situation is, I drive a Ford transit connect which is classed as a goods vehicle. I was driving home from work on a dual carriageway a few evenings ago and saw a police car parked up ahead; didn't check my speed but was comfortable that I had nothing to worry about and just cruised past them, when to my dismay they pulled out behind me and put the blue lights on. I pulled over, the pc walked up next to my van and I opened the door; and he told me that he had clocked me in the distance doing 80mph in what was a 60mph limit for a goods vehicle (70 in a car but 60 for a van). As I say I was shocked to be quite honest, but he gave me the whole 'anything you say may harm your defence' talk so I was kind of scared to say / ask anything further (Essex police by the way). He showed me this little black box device which he'd allegedly used to clock me in the distance, and showed me a little red flashing light on it which he said showed that I was speeding. He asked if I had my licence, which I produced, and he took down my details and gave me a paper ticket, he'd written on it 80/60 indicating that I was caught doing 80 in a 60 zone. They also checked the vehicle (which is a company van) and asked me if it was a fleet/work vehicle to which I said yes it was. They asked if I'd taken a speed awareness course in the last 2 years, which I have not - I have taken one in the past but it was May 2018, so almost 3 years ago. I should also add that, I was disqualified from driving for 6 months from April 2019 to October 2019 due to totting up. My licence was then wiped clean with 0 points (At least that's what it shows on my licence info on DVLA, although at the time the judge did tell me I'd get it back with 6 points as I'd totted up 18 so that's always confused me) Since getting my licence back in October 2019 I have not re offended, until allegedly now; I thought I was doing so well And so I have a few questions; I'm assuming that I don't have much of a leg to stand on in terms of asking them to prove the speed - or would it even be worth contesting that anyway & can this be done without going to court? Main obvious question, what is my likely punishment? From what I can figure out online it seems as though a speed awareness course probably wouldn't be an option anyway due to the alleged speed? So would I be right to assume probably 3, or even 4 points? Or worse?! And, what sort of fine? Finally, will the notice be sent directly to my home address due to the fact that they took all of my details at roadside, as opposed to going through the process of sending it to the registered keeper (my employer) who then usually have to identify the driver and pass on the details (ie, will my employer be made aware of this offence or not?) Sorry to ramble on, I just want to make sure I've provided all the info; any advice whatsoever will be hugely appreciated. And I know I'm a stupid boy and desperately need to slow down. I'm sure there's a helpline on the paperwork that you can phone to ask for help. Between us we have a pretty good understanding of the law, but when it comes to administrative matters like this you're far better off just asking the ticket office that issued the paperwork.

Just read it through again slowly, these forms are designed by nerds to whom the many different varieties of reference number are important, so they are unlikely to have got it wrong, if you are asked to fill in what seems the wrong number of characters, you are probably trying to use the wrong reference number.

Thanks. I called the help number on the form, the lady checked and said I can see you’ve made the payment, and she gave me the payment reference number (which was a different 8 digit number)... I said ok thanks so where was I supposed to have gotten that from? She said ‘yeah I don’t really know...’ ok cool 😑
Sorted now anyway and sent off. Thanks again |
