I was involved in an accident last night - I know I'm mostly liable, but I'm wondering if the ambulance shares any liability in this scenario:
I was waiting at a 4 way traffic light controlled crossing - https://www.google.com/maps/@53.0125895,-2....3312!8i6656. I was second in line behind a tall VW transporter. When the lights changed to green, we started to move away. The driver in front decided to indicate left at the last second, almost immediately before turning. As he turned, he was confronted with an ambulance on blues but no sirens, passing the traffic waiting at the lights. He stopped part way around the corner. Meanwihle, I had seen the blue lights bouncing off the buildings and instinctively checked my mirrors for an emergency vehicle. By the time I looked back, he had stopped and I had nowhere to go. I realise that running into the back of anybody makes an accident almost entirely my fault, but does the ambulance have any culpability here? They were on the wrong side of the road, approaching a crossroads with the intention of going through a red light, with no sirens going. If any of those facts had been different, the accident wouldn't have occurred. Is it worth looking at this angle? The ambulance stopped at the other side of the crossroads and left their details. |

By the time I looked back, he had stopped and I had nowhere to go. So you were driving in one direction, but looking elsewhere. If any of those facts (above) had been different, the accident wouldn't have occurred. Bingo. This post has been edited by peterguk: Tue, 2 Oct 2018 - 14:39 -------------------- |

No, but you leave enough extra time to look and look back and still have stopping distance.
There is only one person with liability here Iโm afraid. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

If the blue lights werenโt sufficient warning, then why did the car in front stop?

Emergency vehicles quite often run on blue lights only - especially at night, for obvious reasons.

If the blue lights werenโt sufficient warning, then why did the car in front stop? OP says the ambo didn't go through, it was approaching. It reads as the ambulance was on the wrong side of the road passing queuing cars, thus the car in fronts sudden stop. This post has been edited by mickR: Wed, 3 Oct 2018 - 22:14 |

It reads as the ambulance was on the wrong side of the road passing queuing cars, thus the car in fronts sudden stop. The OP admits he saw the blue lights, so presumably the driver in front did too. Whatever, he managed to stop, so no reason to assume that a siren would have made any difference. |

Possibly, but in any case as stated before, the OP drove forward while looking in the mirror
