As a frequent user of the dreaded M20 in Kent, there's a lengthy stretch of motorway London-bound coned off with barriers for the proposed Operation Brock, then a bit further along a lengthy stretch in both directions with narrow lanes for conversion to smart motorway.

On those sections there's Vulture Cams every so often (average speed cameras); the limit is 50mph on those sections. Local internet reports say that "800 motorists have been caught speeding" since the introduction of those limits. that amount to either 800 in a short space of time, or 800 over the period which would account for about 3 a day. It would seem fairly random as to when cameras are actually switched on and on what sections. Some of the cameras aren't even focussed on the road!

Anyway, I got a s172 notice over the weekend for exceeding the 50 limit(62mph) the previous weekend between j3 and j4 coastbound at 00:44 when there was no work going on and no other traffic around! Oh well, another 3 points and £100 that won't go back into the local economy. It's a waste of time going to work these days. I might aswwell give u and continue to eke out an existence on my pension.

Thanks for your contribution towards reducing the national debt!

Use Cruise Control, not worth the effort, if set for 55mph it would have made no real difference to journey time.

Did you not get the offer of a course?

Not yet, I've only just got the s172 notice. I couldn't be arsed to go on a course anyway. The cost of that plus the cost of getting there makes it cheaper in a lot of ways than paying the fine. I may not get offered one anyway as I got 3 points nearly 3 years ago on the Dartford Bridge, also in the middle of the night at 60mph.

I tend to nod off during class based stuff these days, just done a day of driver CPC for my bus licence and had trouble staying wake.

That should not prevent you being offered a course.

Hope that doesn't happen when you are driving your bus! biggrin.gif

Setting cruise control at 62 in a 50 zone with average speed cameras will keep the vultures fed. wink.gif

If your last course was within three years you may not be offered one this time although it appears there is now a motorway version amongst the various courses offered by most forces. (The QE2 bridge is not a motorway). Will points, if chosen in preference to a course, not affect your insurance?

Points seem as unlikely to affect my insurance as a speed awareness course will. A lot of insurers treat them alike these days.

Are you sure? Most insurers do not require a course to be declared but all will want points to be declared even if they do not (?) affect the premium on renewal.

NMAC courses are for infringements on roads with active traffic management, or whatever smart name it has nowadays

Quite true. The M20 j3 to j5 is being upgraded to an ALR smart motorway so the NMAC course shouldn't be available.
