Just a query but..
If the police vehicle used to stop a motorist has any faults (a bulb out for example) can they still issue fines? Its something that rings a bell with me and I have on a number of occassions seen police vehicles with headlights/indicator bulbs out. I know all vehicles are meant to inspected prior to duty otherwise they should be VOR (similar to the armed forces.) I would like to know if I was stopped, whether i have the right to inspect their vehicle for road worthyness and if it was found to be unfit for duty whether they would (by law) be unable to continue the stop and have to let me go? |

Many years ago I got stopped by an unmarked car (MK2 Escort IIRC) driving home from a large bill for new MOT/tyres etc. One of the officers was looking at the paperwork, the other inspecting the car and I was looking at the scenery. I noticed the rather 'tired' condition of their car and decided to do unto it what was being done to mine. It wouldn't have passed even the most generous of MOT inspectors, and would have made scrap value at best. I commented about this and got a shrug of the shoulders, 'we're plod, don't worry' and the like.
The officers were polite, happy that I wasn't a boy racer, all the paperwork was in order and a cheery 'mind how you go sir' as they left. As I drove away I thought about how I wouldn't be allowed to drive a car like that, so why should they? And I wrote a polite letter to the CC, and duck me, I got such a grovelling apology. It's always worth a letter, it'll keep them on their toes. |

If the police vehicle used to stop a motorist has any faults (a bulb out for example) can they still issue fines? YES (just to clarify for ZV1 - we usually agree so lets not spoil a beautiful budding aquaintanceship!)
