I was interested this: "Hornby admitted speeding and was sentenced in his absence. He was disqualified from driving for nine months and handed a £325 fine.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-52...h-motorway.html I thought conventional wisdom was that you can't be banned in your absence - ie you have to be present in court? |

Normally yes. Perhaps he had sent representation or the ban was communicated to him. (A ban was inevitable - just how long was the question)
This is ensure a separate offence is not committed by driving after sentencing as it's immediate. -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

I thought conventional wisdom was that you can't be banned in your absence - ie you have to be present in court? You thought wrong. You cannot be banned in your absence without first being required to attend - failing to adhere to that requirement does not stop you being banned. QUOTE The officer then gave chase, with shocking dashcam footage showing he reached 155mph himself, before Hornby starts to apply the brakes. <...> Speaking after the hearing, PC Foster said he could not believe anyone would drive at such high speeds. -------------------- Andy
Some people think that I make them feel stupid. To be fair, they deserve most of the credit. |

And yet Devon and Cornwall were "fully behind" their officer who tweeted a video of his fellow colleague driving at 140mph on a shout. So am I, if police were capped at say 120, any drug dealer in a stolen high performance car will just think "well, I'll just do 140 down the motorway and the old bill won't follow me..." -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

The context was that "urgent assistance" was required to attend a burglary, which actually ended not being one at all.

Not forgetting that shouts are already called off if it becomes dangerous and that police have the ability to organise forward intervention by various means... |

The context was that "urgent assistance" was required to attend a burglary, which actually ended not being one at all. I haven't looked up the story but from reading it at the time I thought they caught a couple guys in the act? Might have been enclosed premises rather than burglary, but I was sure they caught someone. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php
