Hi.
Been a member for a while but this is my first post in 8 years. I’m hoping I can get some advice to stop me from overthinking and ruining my sleep. The other day, Tuesday 26th, I was driving down the M1 southbound between Leeds and Leicester. I was being cautious and slowing down past the speed cameras even though the gantry signs weren’t on. I lost concentration for a short period and passed a camera just before junction 24 at what my dash was showing as 91mph. I didn’t notice a flash but it was really sunny so not sure I would have noticed if it did.The gantry sign above was off. Does anyone know if the cameras are permanently on? and if so do they trigger above a certain speed? I know it NSL if the signs are off but not sure if they trigger at 10% +2 or higher. Can’t find any decent info on the web confirming one way or another, although there are a few news articles claiming they were to be turned on permanently but not come across anyone who has been caught. Thank all for your help! |

Noone can know for sure. If the vehicle is correctly registered to you you'll know in a fortnight.

The cameras there are permanently on, unless they are off for a specific reason. Yes they enforce the NSL which is why ‘surfing’ is a a risky strategy.
Not familiar with that section, some sections of motorway all gantries have cameras, some not. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

Well the good news is that excess will qualify for a 3 points £100 fixed penalty if you were caught.

You need to ask yourself "Why would the cameras not be on?"
If you are driving at an indicated 91mph and are driving at speeds above the limit and manipulating the speed enforcement systems by 'camera surfing' you are bound to come unstuck at some stage. Is it really worth the hassle? If 2 cars are driven 20 miles on a motorway without any congestion at 90mph and 70mph, the car driven at 70mph would arrive less than 4 minutes after the car driven at 90mph. Why bother? |

You’re absolutely right and on reflection it was very silly of me and certainly not worth the hassle or stress it’s caused me. But I guess we have all done silly things that we regret after. No one’s perfect, I’m certainly not, but I definitely won’t be camera surfing again! |
