Looking at that location on Street View it's difficult to fathom how the driver failed to see a train coming from their right - but then it's difficult to understand how they failed to see the flashing lights or hear the bells, either.

Damage would suggest that train was reversing and struck the car from the left.
Which makes me wonder if the driver was looking right and seeing nothing, ignored the flashing lights, bells etc.

According to the article, train was doing 8 miles an hour. Which my maths says is about 4 yards a second.
Given that, train would have been virtually in front as the car approached, driver must have been blind, drunk (maybe both) or late for Tee Off.

More easy to understand how he didn’t see a train coming from the left, which as DD says it’s clear it was from the cars position and damage, but missing the lights/siren.......

I may be adding two and two and getting five but I reckon he just ignored them.
Route to golf course so regular crosser.
Knows that trains will be slow and good vision along track.
Knows that could be waiting at lights for a few minutes.
Looked right, saw nothing, drove onto crossing without checking left.
Bang!
Fat Controller not happy and Thomas is all shook up.

Maybe train went forward, right to left, then had to reverse (points re-set and is being moved onto the other line for example).

Car sees train pass and ignores fact that lights etc. still showing and think it's safe to go?

The train was going in reverse if the reports are correct it was on its way from Weyborne to Sheringham.

The loco was running tender first, going to collect the carriages for the luncheon train. Hence the tender hit the car or the car hit the tender to be more accurate according to reports on a railway forum.

Tests by the railway proved the lights and warning sounds were working correctly.
