News over the weekend in the "quality" papers is that DVLA are introducing a new on-line facility to report address changes for a V5C document. Up to now, the process has been to send in the existing V5C with the new address entered. It can be weeks before the information is updated and a new V5C sent out. Many people have sent off their V5C after house moves and committed a bus lane or other traffic contravention, and the PCN has been sent to the old address due to DVLA tardiness.

What I would hope this facility offers is a single reports of an address change to update both Driver Licence and also any V5Cs held by the person making the report. DVLA have really been in the Dark Ages when it comes to use of modern IT.

No chance - there's no direct link between a driver's licence and a registered keeper, even if one could often be implied by matching name/address. A typical example of real life being far more complicated than the "normal" situation suggests it should be.

Last time I used the online DL change it was fairly obvious one should change any V5C. A panel highlighted if I recall. Giving it a checkbox would perhaps help. Equally a reprint of the paper form, perhaps something just above where you sign it reminding you.

Certainly the UI to progress a joint service could be better, perhaps inviting the change of vehicles.

It may not be overly beneficial though. There needs to be a reasonable level of security and I wouldn't expect many to have their V5C to hand at the instant they are changing their DLs.

What is needed is an initial selection screen that invites the user to select from three options what he wants to do - change DL address, change V5 address, and change both. On selection of an option, the screens ask for the relevant data, and respond with what is held currently, then the user would enter the new address.

As there is no link between licence and v5.

If both were to be updatable online, then the easiest fix would be;

On completion of changing address on driving licence, once 'confirm changes' or whatever it's called has been clicked.
Then when you get the 'success message', then this should include a message reminding user that v5 also needs to be updated, leaving the user with a 'update v5 now ' or finish choice.

The update v5 option should take you to a blank update v5 screen. (As no link)

On completion of which, the user will get a reminder that driving licence also needs to be updated along with any other vehicles,
Leaving user with a choice of :
Update another vehicle v5,
update licence,
Finish.

Yes, I'd go with that, but the key thing is to make users aware they must update both. On the council tickets forum we see far too many people who move house, report DL address change thinking it changes the V5 address.

There's a big warning on the driving licence change page that tells you precisely that! I can tell you from personal experience that people just don't read what's on the page, whatever warnings you add or however prominent you make them. The continual stream of people trying to register here with a Hotmail account, despite the warning right next to the box where they type the email address, is just one example.

This is why I suggested that the user be led, via click boxes, to update both.

If the user has to choose between 'update v5 now' and 'finish'. Then 99% of time user will complete both tasks.

Whereas if a user has a message 'remember to update v5', then user likely to forget or simply not read message.

I worked for a online supermarket website for 20 years.
You cannot rely on customers to complete forms correctly. In fact you can rely on them not being completed correctly and systems should be designed to mitigate this by leading customer.

There's no point in getting ****** off with the customers 'they're not doing it right!!!' But for everyone's benefit design it as if everyone is inexperienced with
IT and/or subject to errors. This is why you have to enter passwords twice , for example.

In your example about hotmail. Is it really not possible to trap the text 'hotmail' and reject the entry? In the same way that the validation (presumably) checks the format xxxx@yyy ?
