Hi All, just been away for a week and received an NIP when I returned home. It was on the Carmarthen to Tenby road which alternates between single and dual carriageway. I'd just overtaken someone prior to the road narrowing into one lane and as I went over the brow of the hill there was a copper on a bridge with a 'hairdryer'. Speed alleged is 68mph which is probably about right. Just feel slightly peeved in that I was in the process of adjusting my speed for the single carriageway and the speed is within the alleged 10% + 2mph 'allowance' even mentioned within the speed awareness courses so I'm told. Are the criteria different in Wales? Also, I'm assuming I'll be offered one of these courses (never had one before)? Thanks

Enforcement starts at 68mph but is within the threshold for a course.

The National Police Chief Council's guidelines (which is the source of the "allowance" you refer to) suggests that action should begin at (Limit +10% + 2mph) - so at 68mph in a 60mph limit. You should be offered a course for that speed. They are normally offered up to (Limit + 10% + 9mph).

Thanks for the responses. You say "should" be offered a course. If I don't get offered one, is there any right of appeal?

No, there's no right for a course. But it would be unusual not to offer one.

There is no appeal as such since the whole idea of courses is extra-legal ie not regulated by law, but if not offered one you can certainly ask why but it could happen if there are insufficient places available, which happened in my area some ten years ago. Courses are still currently conducted online.

There is only a very small section of dual carriageway in the section between St Clears and Tenby, and that has a 50mph advisory sign (circle is black rather than red). All the rest are simply an overtaking lane on a single carriageway, so limit is 60 for 99% of the NSL sections. Lots of people are regularly doing over 70 on the sections with the overtaking lane, possibly because they are not understanding what isn't a dual carriageway. .

This.

Dual carriageways have a central reservation in the middle.

If there's only painted lines separating the two directions - even if there are multiple lanes in each direction - it's still a single carriageway, and still a 60.
