Hi all,
Lots of noise in the local news today about drivers using the forth road bridge to avoid traffic on the new Queensferry crossing . Police say they are educating drivers at the moment but no enforcement . What actual law are they breaking ? Can someone find the TRO ( i can’t ) limiting the old bridge to just public transport and cyclists ? And assuming it’s all legit , if caught , what’s the penalty ? Just a fine or points and fine ? Cheers |

Cheers Surely if there's any sort of restriction there must be road signs? -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

112 million quid on upgrades for 300 buses a day Random quote... It's an allusion to the original estimated cost of upgrading the old bridge for use by buses after completion of the new bridge, and maintaining it for 15 years. What the critics tend not to mention is that by eliminating the need for bus lanes on the new bridge and reducing the number of access roads required it halved the estimated cost of the new bridge. -------------------- Regards,

They also fail to mention that by the time a solution to 'save' the old bridge was found, the new bridge was well underway. The old one could not have continued with the huge volumes of traffic going over it per day. New one is so much better- I've only been stuck on it once and it was the first week or two after it opened. Ever since, (touch wood) I've not had any delays which I used to have every time I used the old one. |

You obviously aint going over it at peak times then, or listening to the radio at peak times that still say delays onto the bridge! To be fair though, the new bridge wasn't about cutting the delays was it, more just a replacement - any small cutting in delays will be welcome if they are a by-product. Not as any saving in delays will last long with all the house building going on in Fife. Anyway, with the old FRB, why not just put barriers up that only public service busses can get through similar to those at the airport? |

Here's the sign that communicates the restriction (taken from Traffic Scotland's Twitter):

I can't see how it can be revenue raising. The structural issues have been examined to death and the current prohibitions the only sensible option. The closure was as a result of recommendations by engineers, not the police or councils.
If the restrictions are not enforced then the bridge will wear out and all the traffic on the FRB will need to use the new bridge. Plus presumably there will need to be some M48 style provision for cyclists and pedestrians. There is not some divine right to drive on any road just because it is fractionally more convenient. |
