A couple of days ago, I got a telephone call from someone asking about my recent accident, nothing unusual there, she said she got it from a Police report. When I started delving a little further (I haven't had any injury accidents in the last 10 years or more) she rang off.

A phoned the number back a bit later and was told it was Leicester cricket clubs number, and they'd had a few such calls. They denied any involvement

Unless its someone using the cricket clubs phone, How else can someone use that number?

I just don't answer calls from unknown numbers; if it's important, they'll leave a message. (I turn off the ringer, too.)

Not as amusing as answering creatively, I admit, but my time is limited and I generally prefer to do other things with it.

--Churchmouse

I don't answer withheld numbers and I don't have voicemail. If they have a legitimate reason to contact me, they can send me a letter in the post.

That's another option. In my rather unscientific experience, however, those unknown callers that actually leave messages are well under 10% of the total. Maybe 5%. And those that do leave messages are almost always legit.

When I have answered these calls in the past, I have had some success with the "which accident do you mean?" approach. The callers usually imply that they are calling about a particular incident, but of course, they have no details about it because all they are given (by my "helpful" insurer, I suppose) is a name and a phone number. Next time I inadvertently answer one of these calls I think I will tell them it wasn't an accident...I did "it" on purpose.

I've just had one! Tried to keep him on for as long as possible, but failed miserably. Told him my vehicle had been T-Boned six months ago, but when he asked for details of the injury, I couldn't resist telling him I'd had my leg amputated and he hung up straight away.

Drat. I must try harder next time.

But that's quite possible... It's not like you said you had your sense of humour amputated... laugh.gif

I must admit I play them along for as long as possible too. Asking them for the pre-agreed password is quite a funny one which throws them. I told one guy my accident was tomorrow which he queried - I replied he should call back then, strangely he didn't...

For those offering loans, always push for higher than their 'maximum'.

When I get the 'our records show you've been involved in an accident' I just say which one? I've had several in the past few months.

I did respond to a marketing call once and gave
Name: Terry May
Address 10 Downing Street, London, SW1A 2AA

I get regular calls now asking to speak to Mr Terry May.

No doubt the PM is getting loads of junk mail.

Do you not have to be in possession of something to have it amputated? tongue.gif

A new one on me, needless to say I hung up.
Caller number 0208 672 9841, recorded message which basically said my IP address was recorded as trying to hack into a government facility and that I would be disconnected in next 24 hours unless I called number...….
I think I will wait to be disconnected and then give my provider a rollocking…. wont happen.

If you're at home during the day the sheer volume of these calls quickly takes it from being an irritant that you might take the time to have some fun with, to absolutely infuriating.

One of the best buys I ever made was a new home phone that includes BT Call Guardian. Cold callers, robocallers and other scammers never go through the announcement process, and peace (and my blood pressure) is restored. smile.gif

OK, just managed to keep one talking for 9 minutes and I got as far as him giving me his mobile phone number before I hung up.

Any ideas on some cool things I could sign this number up to online that might fill up his txt inbox?

plenty of those surveys around. ones that promise a prize but actually ask a million questions, mining data.
