I was on my way to Scotland yesterday and saw a camera van on the B179 bridge overlooking the M6. TomTom alerted me and I slowed down fairly quickly but I’m guessing they only need a few seconds to ping your speed and the van was already in sight. I wasn’t going very fast, a little over 80 maybe (true speed not indicated). Was just wondering what threshold they typically send a NIP for.
I actually realised afterwards that the van was in the exact same place as the last time I drove to scotland some years ago so I feel a bit stupid for not remembering. Pretty sure I slowed down around the same distance as the last time, and was probably going quite a bit quicker the last time as I was in a much faster car back then. Didn’t get a NIP last time so hopefully I’m ok this time. The annoying thing is I was driving very carefully for most of our journey yesterday due to the torrential rain, way under the speed limit, around 60 or slower because visibility was so bad. It was only after visibility cleared and the rain had stopped that I picked up a bit. Thanks |

Was just wondering what threshold they typically send a NIP for. 79mph inclusive. (So it's close) -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

How common is it for people to get NIPs for 81-83 in that area?

Only a 2 week wait will answer that for sure if you are (or know) the registered keeper. -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

I realise that’s the only way to know if I’ve been tagged this time, was just curious how frequently others have been nipped in the low 80s there. Almost everyone cruises at 80ish on clear motorways, they must be making a fortune. |

was just curious how frequently others have been nipped in the low 80s there. If they are operating at the time then everyone exceeding 78mph will get a NIP. I can't tell you figures I'm afraid - you can submit a Freedom of Information request if you want to know. Almost everyone cruises at 80ish on clear motorways, they must be making a fortune. Only from those choosing to do so Personally I set the cruise to 75mph which is an actual of around 73 or 74 which is well within the threshold. As for making a fortune, the fines go to the Treasury. Think of it as the law-abiding taxpayer being subsidised by the criminals. |

Maybe you drive on different roads to me, I rarely see traffic all keeping to 70. |

I wonder if speed awareness courses can be done online these days. I’d be a bit nervous about doing one in person right now. I think if the worst happens and there’s no online option for speed awareness I’ll probably take the points rather than the risk of covid infection.

Maybe you drive on different roads to me, I rarely see traffic all keeping to 70. Regulars on here know the M6/74 are regular haunts for mobile cameras being mostly remote and relatively traffic free - many speedos over-read, so 80 or below is the very upper-most: I risk is an indicated 77 mph............ |

I think I’ll just stick to 70 on the way home, the time saving from driving at 80 is minuscule anyway even if there are times when it’s probably safe to do so.

Almost everyone cruises at 80ish on clear motorways, they must be making a fortune. Your fine, if you get one, will go to the government. So no fortunes to be made for the police. They may get some money returned from any speed awareness course, but remember it costs to put the van and the person there so again, the fortune is only made at an expensive risk. If there was a police representative at the end of the M6 and before you disappeared into Jockistan, with a collection bucket for fines that was deposited into the Cumbria PCC's consolidated fund, you may have a point...but you don't. |

I think if the worst happens and there’s no online option for speed awareness I’ll probably take the points rather than the risk of covid infection. My wife did an online speed awareness course (£92 and 2.5 hours of her time) in Kent last month (offence date February). No sweat and no points. Thames Valley Police were happy to accept the delay due to the pandemic. This post has been edited by Lodesman: Wed, 26 Aug 2020 - 16:05 |

The same journey @ 70mph will take 171 minutes. [/quote] That’s if you could maintain an average of those speeds for 200 miles in this country !!! This post has been edited by Lodesman: Wed, 26 Aug 2020 - 16:16 |

And they have a range of 1km. Not sure how configurable to speed camera warnings on TomTom are, but you need to be warned of a mobile camera a lo-o-ong way ahead of encountering it, because of the range. Fixed Gatsos and Specs need much less warning. The PocketGPS app allows you to configure each. Not that I use it any more - much easier just to stick to the limit. Especially as much of my motorway driving is M25 and other smart motorways with cameras everywhere. As for fortunes being made, nope. If you look at the number of speeding offences committed and multiply by £100, it's really a tiny drop in the ocean when it comes to all government revenue/spending. |
