Road Closed - Access Only

Was driving on the street and suddenly see "Road Closed - Access Only". As the pub I go to was there, I passed by but there was no parking until I reached a sign that finally said "Road Closed", by which point I did a U-Turn and proceeded back. As I was doing this a car coming the other way very aggressively approaches me and stops in the middle of the road. I open my window to look out and he does not give me any way. I then notice they are 2 'heavy' undercover police officers in full active duty uniform (could even be armed, they definitely did not look like your average beat neighbourhood bobby) in the car staring at me (they did not flash their lights, just staring). I tell them 'road ahead is closed', then they say "I guess I will turn around then". They give me very aggressive stares and make me reverse a bit, then give me some way to pass through.

Is there a punishment for "Road Closed - Access Only?" or something? Or were they waiting to see if I was going to cross the "Road Closed" sign and then flash the lights and pull me over.

Should I go back and take pictures of the area in case they try to prosecute me? I did not pass the "Road Closed Sign", only the "Road Closed - Access Only".

"Undercover", while in "active duty uniform" - how does that work, then?

The car was undercover. It was a black Ford. Maybe 'unmarked' is the better term.

If you did not pass a "Road Closed" sign there is no offence.

How about "road closed - acess only"? There were 2 signs, one that said "Road Closed - Access Only" which I passed, but then there was after that a "Road Closed" sign that I did not pass and did a U-Turn before, which I then encountered the unmarked police car just after I had completed the manoeuvre.

Access Only is a get out of jail free term...… as long as you genuinely intended to access somewhere beyond the sign.

As for the cops, mebbe they were as peed off as you that the road was closed and they could not get to the pub.
Or mebbe it was closed cos Aliens had landed and they were checking you weren't a little green man.

The pub beyond the access only sign is my regular pub! So absolutely! I was amazed at how aggressive they were though they literally stopped on the middle of the road for like 30 seconds! They kept on staring at me and I kept on staring back, it was quite funny. They made me reverse before they gave me way!

Even worse, they looked more aggressive than that. Mind you, with the amount of crime in London these days, I am not surprised. I was genuinely annoyed though with them stopping in the middle of the road for 30 seconds, if they had a problem with me they could have turned on their lights and pulled me over, i had to wait until they moved a bit towards me until I realised they were police.

(i am assuming they did a run on my plates to check for pending warrants or any problems with documentation before letting me through)

Take cops, possible motives, road closed sign out of the story and what do we have.
Two drivers meet on a narrow road and neither gives way for 30 seconds.
It is a none story, IMO you are worrying too much on it.

What on earth is a 'pending warrant' and would it be to arrest your plates then?

When checking plates, don't police check the owner of the car and see if he has any pending arrest warrants? Obviously they check the plate to see if the car is insured, mot and road taxed, but they can see registered keeper details and if they do a check on that they can see if they have any 'outstanding' with the law?

Do you often worry that there might be outstanding warrants for your arrest? If this is a genuine concern I would suggest you pop into a police station and ask, at least then it can be at a time of your choosing.

No I was just trying to understand police procedure as to who they decide to check out and who not when deciding to stop someone. I see on twitter they stop people when they do an ANPR check and get a 'hit'.

Yes
Vehicles of interest, maybe associated with person of interest, no tax, insurance etc, whether RK details bring up something.

Don't think they go as far as outstanding library books or whether you identify as non binary gender, that is the concept of the tin hat brigade who firmly believe that Big Brother is out to get you.

Remember there are multiple levels of checks... automatic ANPR which may ping a suspect vehicle, then more manual checks via PNC for further details.
If both blokes were staring at you, they weren't tapping away in the computer trying to pin something on you.

Also remember that TwitFace et all believes that Group Wisdom is the sum of all who participate.
It is actually the IQ of the lowest who jumps on the bandwagon.

I can’t recall routinely checking the RK (don’t know who the owner is) following a vehicle check unless they were known to me (and thus might have warrants - not sure what a “pending” warrant is) or I was otherwise dealing with them, following a stop. I did once PNC a guy following a wing mirror to wing mirror RTC who happened to have a warrant out for him - wasn’t his lucky day. Can’t say it was routine.

Only an actual arrest warrant would be relevant, a pending (presumably you mean under preparation but not yet approved) isn't relevant and as far as I'm aware no register is held anywhere of them anyway...... perhaps you know better....or are just tossing out terms?

This 'access only' thing is interesting. I rode my motorbike to northern Ireland a couple of years ago and went to the Giant's Causeway. When I go touring on my bike I like to take a pic of it in places that I visit. So I was disappointed to see an 'access only' sign at the top of the hill about half a mile up from the attraction. Given that this was the summer and I was wearing full motorbike gear I didn't want to try walking that far down then back up. So I went down the road and there was a turning circle at the bottom where I could take a pic. So does the purpose of my ride down to the bottom constitute needing access? I got a couple of glares from people in yellow jackets as I think they make a chunk of money from the little buses running people up and down the hill.

Bane of my life driving out in the sticks when I come across a ROAD CLOSED AHEAD sign, or its EXCEPT FOR ACCESS variant, which road is closed? how far along? before or after where I need to access????? Increasingly there's a rather sulky looking youth in full hi-viz manning a solitary traffic cone who will only let you pass if you tell him where you're going but doesn't seem to actually know where the closure is and therefore whether or not yo can get to it.
