My wife has been watching the BBC local news

Following an article on the variation of fuel prices in the area, a viewer has just emailed the programme

Because the petrol in Hull is 8p/litre cheaper, he drives there from York to fill up

It's about an 80 miles round trip that takes 2 hrs and uses £12 of fuel to save £3 - £4

The MD at my first company after graduation was no better

During the 1977 fuel shortage he ordered his company car (a Granada) to be refuelled at a garage in Reading

We were based in Uxbridge 30+ miles away; his car did about 23 mpg and garages were selling maximum two gallons !

He's mad. I find it more effective to use the map on filllpg.co.uk (You can use petrolprices.com if your car uses the expensive stuff) and just fill up at the cheapest station that happens to be somewhere where I'd be driving past anyway. There's quite a few major supermarkets just a couple of minutes off many major motorways and A roads, but without a map or app you'd never know they're there.

Sounds more like he has to be in Hull anyway and fills up whilst he's there, which has gone through the local news mangle and ended up as that.

Or someone has just lied in an email to get on the news. After all "I fill up when the tank is a bit low and see a relatively cheap petrol station" isn't going to get you on the news.

I used to fill up whenever I was in Watford, the scant consolation of cheap petrol slightly offsetting having to see the sodding in-laws.

I hope it is a case of having to go to Hull anyway.
But the depths of human stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

It must be true

Why would anyone willingly want to go to Hull?

I did a post-grad there and went into the centre one evening to explore the night life

The only activity I saw was a small group using a cashpoint
A visit to a filling station is probably the highlight of anyone's day

One place where I worked monitored our fuel efficiency. If, as a hypothetical example, my route was 1000km and my fuel use was 17 litres/100km, I used 170 litres of fuel. They however only took notice of the 17l/100km.

Somebody else does the same route but travels the whole thing on motorways/major roads and manages 15l/100km, to them and the bosses, that was better.
The fact that the other driver traveled 1300km instead of 1000km was lost on them. His fuel efficiency was better, even though he used more fuel (195 litres)
I gave up trying to explain it.

The figures are hypothetical, the example is based on reality.

When a business monitors performance by targets, somebody will always find a way to game the system and meet those targets
Sometimes it's the only way to get the work done

As an efficiency measure, one of my former employers focussed on the stores

If we wanted a dozen screws, we needed signed authorisation from the production manager who only signed the forms between 9 and 10 am
We also had to show that we needed 12 screws not 9 or 10

We could no longer have 40p cans that were used in large quantities - instead we would have to spend 20 minutes cleaning each old can with 50p of solvent

Fortunately our manager was happy to support his team's solution to the problem

If something was needed urgently, he signed a petty cash advance slip
After taking the slip to accounts to draw the cash, we would borrow a car from the pool and drive to the nearest town to buy what we needed

I get petrol 45 miles from home, but I fill up every second week when I'm in the town. Difference in price is about 3ppl compared to buying locally, so it adds up to around £75 a year saving for me.

Closes station to my house charges 79p a litre. There's a morrisons 60 miles away, but I drive past it anyway on a regular basis, they charge 55.9p. On a full tank (65 litres) that means paying £36 rather than £51, saving me £15 each time or about £1,000 a year.

Reminds me of someone I worked with many years ago. He owned a motorbike which he used for getting to work. He was staying in digs but his landlady would not let him leave the bike at the house. So he found a lock-up garage but it was in the opposite direction to his workplace. It turned out that he had to walk further from house to the garage than walking from house to work.

At a company I worked at years ago, we had an employee who ran his old Zodiac on the product of the solvent recovery plant - acetone contaminated with fibreglass gelcoats

It was a bit slow and smoky

Get a fuel card, that way you pay the agreed average price. that's why lorries fill up on motorway services, they pay the "bunker" price not the pump price! My own company card charges this week something line 1.07/litre for diesel, plus VAT., so overall a couple of p cheaper than pump prices round here. Plus I can fill up at the £1.48/litre place on the motorway for £1.28 inc vat. smile.gif
