So apparently it can detect mobile phone use, and whether it's being used via Bluetooth.
And yet they didn't fit a camera to take and record photos to be used as evidence. Just lights a crossed-out-smartphone sign.
Anyone would think they had no confidence in the technology...

This does sound a bit like a wind-up. Mobile phones are continuously transmitting and receiving on the control channels so the mobile can be tracked around and any text messages or emails sent out. Extensive use of multiplexing both TDM and FDM is used to create over 2000 channels per cell and control, data, and voice channels are all handled using this multiplexing. It is impossible to determine whether a person is actually using a phone just from the signals. My own mobile phone receives emails and messages whilst I'm driving along and I get a chime to tell me. What can, of course, be done, is to detect the signal and then take a photo as the vehicle approaches. The photo would then be the proof or not of use during driving. However, if a photo is taken for every passing vehicle with a phone, then somebody will have to be employed going through all the photos to pick out the illegal use. I can't see the police doing this very often, frankly.

It seems this all-seeing eye innovative high-tech solution is being trotted out again, more in my neck of the woods this time. I'd be fascinated to see how well it can differentiate between active messaging and background data use/navigation updates, for example.

I think your answer is here:

Lunchtime news was just showing it.
Police spokesman said it was not an enforcement tool but an education one.
Report also said that it could not tell if it was driver or passenger using the phone.
So certainly not foolproof.

Did say that it could tell the difference between hands free or not ??
Personally, I cannot see how it could even tell which car reliably let alone whether use was legal, passive or what.

I reckon it is a pretty sign with a random timer to trigger it, bit like the old TV Detector Vans in your area posters that prompted people to buy a licence

I never knew Bluetooth signals could be paired to cars at distances up to 100 feet away

My phone connects to the handsfree system with a USB cable (which conveniently charges it too!) ... so cleary it isn't fool proof!

I used to do that as part of my postman driver duties, they called it "flag flying".
Go park the van in an area known to have less licences that expected.

People in this country are quite gullible in relation to certain matters, evidence shows.

I was pinged by the mobile phone detecting sign on Friday on the A34.

Using my phone, the sign lit up as it was approached and passed. Cast iron defence - SWMBO was driving! biggrin.gif
