Along the SPECS cameras on the M9 from Newbridge roundabout up the M9 and the M9 spur and the M90 onto the A92 towards Kirkcaldy there are 2 sets of SPECS average speed cameras due to the roadworks while they prepare for the new Forth Road Bridge.

Some time after the yellow poles and cameras went up there have been installed some new kit, just in front of them, maybe 5 meters in front. On all but one of them (I think, certainly on most)

Its a normal galvanised pole, shorter than the yellow pole but has, what looks like 3 or 4 small panels on, pointing down to the road, kinda parallel to the road. I would say that each panel is A4 sized and are three or four in a row. The look similar to solar panels in their appearance but are facing down to the road, maybe at an angle of 110 degrees.

I thought at first they could be for height of vehicles (HGV's having a lower speed limit than cars) but the speed limit for all vehicles in the roadworks will be 40mph.

Obviously cant take a picture as its a motorway and I travel alone.

Any ideas what they are?

Steve

That's how they see in the dark, it's based upon vampire technology?

OP - Just guessing, but down here (in the SouthEast) the SPECS cameras often have a floodlight aimed at about the same distance as you describe, presumably to aid the cameras at night. Maybe these new panels are an infrared equivalent - probably more effective at night or in misty conditions, and less distracting for the drivers.

It's about time that "The Cuts" reached the point where DfT's budgets couldn't afford to keep playing around with new scamera technology and just keep the roads repaired and maintained. I saw yesterday that the police will be given new powers to issue fixed penalties (or awareness courses etc) for a whole new raft of "careless driving" offences, with no right of appeal other than through the courts.

Nothing seems to change whichever party is in power - the bureaucrats and civil servants run the country their way, regardless.

They are infrared floodlights - there are some on the B1096 near Benwick (Cambridgeshire) where there is a set of SPECS

OK, I assumed that as there is already an IR emitter next to the cemera itself, it wouldnt need extra floodlighting. The Start and End cameras dont seem to have these extra floodlights on. Strange

Never seen these before. Thanks.

This thing doesn't look like a filament powered incandescent light bulb or even like a "Swan vesta". So thank you and good night to the road safety support team! cool.gif
