Is it just me or do you have the most bizarre targeted ads?

Everywhere else I get DIY and tech stuff. On Pepipoo...

I should add as well I've already bought Mrs NML a more than ample rack. She can fit all the plates and the big pans too.

I’ve just had an advert for Carphone Warehouse. I think I’ll contact the ASA as it seems that they not only don’t sell carphones but they are not in a warehouse either but in a Currys retail store.

Of interest, does the revenue stream depend on ad loading, clickthrough or what ?

I'm afraid it's difficult for me to get into a detailed discussion on that, as Google are extremely sensitive about anything that could be construed as encouraging people to interact with the ads for any reason other than a genuine interest in the product or service being advertised - what is termed "ad click fraud". All I would say is please don't block the ads, and only click on them if you're genuinely interested in what's being offered.

Part of the reason for supposedly targeted advertising not actually being that relevant is that page content is a consideration in which ads will bid for display, and forum pages rarely have an obvious theme or readily categorised content; they therefore attract more generic ads. I would guess that people who routinely block ad tracking while browsing, and hence leave less of a trail to hint at their interests, also tend to see more general interest ads.

That's fair enough, thanks Fredd.

Pepipoo has been unblocked at my end since you shouted at me sad.gif
No longer an ad free zone.
But the ads here are not onerous, do not delay loading and if they help the revenue stream, fair play.

I feel quite guilty now, I also don't see ads, I just assumed PPPoo didn't have them but now I see a blank space where one should be.
Not sure how to change that though. Mine are blocked by an edited hosts file.

No idea where I got the file from, it was years ago.
The only downside is that if I do search for something on google shopping it blocks the click to see the product in the actual shop.

Probably worth either updating it or better still get something else, either a DNS solution like Pi-hole or a browser extension.

Problem with HOSTS is, beyond being out of date, any site trying to install something nasty can just call a server by IP address. It's a real threat. If you ever install a server with an IPv4 address you will find, instantly, there are thousands of attempts every minute to log into your root account - which is why the first thing you do is disable root access.

Compromised servers are of course valuable generally, but the unblacklisted IP address is a big part of the lure.

Thanks - being pleased about cutting off the only source of funding we have, despite us making the advertising as unobtrusive as possible, is really thoughtful.

Is the paid subscription-only Supporter Members' Forum "Bad Boyz & Girlz" not a source of funding?

It would be, if people were subscribing. The fact is that the vast majority of revenue we receive is from the advertising, and online advertising rates continue to drop - there's a reason that commercial non-paywalled news sites now tend to be covered in obtrusive ads and auto-play videos.

One of the benefits of subscribing is that you don't see adverts.

I will say there has been a few questionable adds that have popped up on my end, one was for Adult friend finder, Another one was as mentioned for Breast augmentation, Another for private dental clinics for teeth whitening and bridges and the like (although I suppose we should have pearly whites when passing a speed cam Smile *flash biggrin.gif Flash*)

But more often I see KIA adverts. Which I don't mind.

I tend to get odd adverts after doing a cookie clean ups.

If you want some more entertaing ads, try using a VPN with servers in places like Colombia and Nigeria. Very enlightening. smile.gif

I'll try that, but if I forget to turn the VPN off I often get Google in foreign languages.
