i have a the tomtom software (version 5) on my compaq pocket pc. for only £20 or so a year i can download the POI (point of interest) safety camera locations in the UK & in other European countries.

can anyone vouch for the following:

1- how easy it is to download & setup at first?
2- how easy it is to update?
3- how reliable the locations are?

anything else i need to be aware of?

thanks in advance (perhaps not the best place to post this but i coulnd't find a great place)....

If I managed it, then anybody can.

And yes, it's bang up to date and easy to update also.

I use Tom Tom 5.000 on a Navman PDA (It is a rebadged Acer).

I'm using the Pocket GPS World database. I find it easy to download to my PC and then upload to the PDA (more so than the NavMan version) and to set up the POI warnings. This database is updated monthly and costs £2 per month or £19 per year although you get 'credits' towards this each time you are the first person to contribute a camera position. The credit is given once it is confirmed by a second party. The database is available for a number of different software/hardware combinations.

Depending upon which version of Tom Tom 5 you have you can even add a function to add a camera POI "on the fly" as you drive past one (it needs to be 5.100 or later so I can't use it). I would stress that this is intended to be used by a passenger, not the driver, in the interests of road safety.

On this database the users actually provide the feedback to update the locations and generally they are pretty good - the only gripe I have is the large number of mobile location in seemingly silly places that have appeared lately. I think this could be due to some ANPR locations being flagged as mobiles.

I don't think that's quite correct. I've got tomtom 5 (not sure of the exact version but I bought it as soon as it was released - July 2005 I think). Anyway (from memory - and it been a while since I've used it) when you set up each POI you have the option of 'warn only when on route yes/no'. If you set this to no then tomtom will warn when you approacing a POI even if there is no route programmed in. Perhaps this obscure functionallity has just been made a bit clearer in the later versions ?

Version 6 (on a TomTom 910) certainly has the functionality to add cameras as you pass them. tongue.gif

Pocket GPS World have developed an addon to Tom Tom 5 that you can download - it doesn't work with 5.000 (which I have got and which is the original version - you can upgrade provided you still have your registration code - I don't) but it does with 5.100 onwards apparently. I have tried it with 5.000 and it causes the software to lock up.

This add on actually takes the add POI facility that is already buried fairly deeply in the menu's, brings it forward and automatically sets the POI folder destination and creates a new icon/screen subset for adding Speed Camera POI. It then allows you to correctly input the type of camera, speed limit, direction etc from the touch screen.

As CJM kindly points out that is the one that the link points to. I do not pay for it - if you contribute new cameras to the database you get free access (I think it is 1 month per camera submitted and confirmed) - as I was a founder user I've got a lifetime subscription. They also do a camera capture add-on that works like the Tom Tom POI capture but already has all the right options to add a camera built in.
