I recently sent someone £70 in cash in a large letter sent 1st class recorded delivery.

The letter took nearly a week to arrive and both the recipient and the postman noted that the letter had been opened. The money had been stolen.

The had asked for cash and in fact would have been easier for me.

Where do I stand? The post office wont compensate either me or the recipient.

Who bears the loss? me or the recipient?

Indeed.

All courier and post service specifically exempt cash for any liability

You can report it to police for a crime reference but that's about it and nothing is likely to come from it

You stand in a slightly painful lesson learnt.

Old people who don't use online banking.

Or, in the case of my grandparents, old people who run a cash-in-hand business and don't want to bank the cash.

My parents - who would be +100 if still alive used postal orders back in the 1960s Back then people rarely sent cash. Not a new revelation.

Hers´s one lol

´´Russell Brand has admitted he stole money from people's letters when he was a postman. Brand explained that the cash was used to buy drugs. The British comedian worked for the Royal Mail when he was younger and reveals he only wanted the job because he thought it could boost his chances of having sex´´.
