Hi all,

It seems this London Borough of Redbridge seems to catch me doing everything - I've been "robbed" so many times this year and the fines aren't reasonable in any way. Anyways mini rant over..

I received a PCN for apparently committing a prohibited turn (U-turn) on Ilford High Road. I agree there are loads of signs prohibiting a U-Turn, the video shows my car pulling to the left (to the point I'm off the carriage and almost 50% off the road and 50% in the cycle lane), then turning and heading towards Aldborough Road South - it is CLEAR I went down this road from the video).

The place at which I began turning is in front of the Smart Motor Co shop which I know has a sign ahead of it, see link of location:

https://www.instantstreetview.com/@51.56287...1.08h,-6.33p,1z

My question basically is what is my case if I am to argue that either

A) I was off the carriageway before making any sort of turn
B) A U-turn refers that it is a turn in the road that means travelling back the direction one came from - I did not go back in the direction I came from, I clearly went down a different road completely after turning.

I found this post on a previous forum and wondered if it's something I can go on?

I would really appreciate thoughts/advice on this PCN

Bang to rights. You circumvented the no right turn into Aldborough by going past the junction and doing a U turn 20 yds past a no U turn sign.

Discount looks attractive

+ 1 Double bang to rights.

However wait and see if anyone spots an error on the PCN. Redbridge seems to have fixed a printing problem we've seen before.

Thanks for the replies - it does seem that I was bang to rights but thought I'll check. Stupid oversight on my part, I guess you live and learn.

Any thoughts on the post here though? Seems as though someone got off for the same thing?

We don't know where the driver turned in that case. Maybe they did a turn right near the junction, which is why the adjudicator found the u-turn incomplete.

Its a 50/50 at best, but until you reach the sign shown just after your turn you are not governed by it. the one you did pass has no distance so how would you know when the restriction ends? you could always use the case, but IMO it would not apply to you as you clearly did drive back in the direction from which you came.

The no U turn sign is not s 36 as per RTA 1988 it is a scheduled sign for enforcements under LLAA2003

The road sign manual states that
QUOTE
4.50 Where the prohibition applies to a length of
road, the start should be signed using a pair of signs
to diagram 614, one on each side of the road or, in
the case of a dual carriageway, on each side of the
carriageway. Both signs should have a supplementary
plate to diagram 570 showing the distance over
which the prohibition applies. A sign and distance
plate should also be erected within 50m of each
point of entry from a side road. Elsewhere repeater
signs, without distance plates, should be provided
at intervals of about 100m or, on dual carriageway
roads, just before each break in the central
reservation. Unlike speed limit and rural clearway
signs, the repeater signs should be the full size
appropriate to the speed of traffic (see Appendix A).

If I have read this correctly there should be a no u turn sign on both sides of the carriageway. Also is the distance 400 yds as stated on a sign further back that you should have passed.

Yep this sign shuts the door on that defence

Also the requirement for two signs has been removed

see para 6.3 page 28

Thanks that's very helpful.

I think I have to bite the bullet on this one then.

I hate that this borough charges ridiculous fines for things like this, I'd say a £30 after discount is more appropriate for people to learn their lesson without having disdain for the council. But yes I know, I should obey highway code more strictly.

Thanks for all your comments guys.
