Today is the 1st aniversary of me passing my driving test so I thought I would share this with all you good people.
Its been an interesting 12 months.
1x NIP for speeding, No further action taken
2x shunts from behind, total damage: cracked numberplate
1x broken clutch forcing purchase of new(er) car
17000 miles completed without hitting anything (other than a dirt bank late at night, in reverse)
£600 insurance premium down to £375 even though car is less than 10 years old and has 102bhp (the old Pug was 20 years old and had 62 bhp)

Does this qualify me as a good and experienced driver yet, or do I have to wait until I actually win some points before claiming that title?

Congratulations, Pug.

You just need another 15 years without crashing - forwards, backwards or even sideways - to get the "experienced" title.

It is probable that, simply, in addition, in my opinion, as accurately as I want to make it, probably, I am an orang utang. But that's not what the eye sees.

Hi pug

I would like to offer my congratulations on surviving a year of driving.

As regards experience, 17k just isnt enough yet. Lets say 500k and you will be just about there.

On that basis, I did 90k last year. What does that make me, (well other than well paid!) icon_wink.gif

But hey, congratulations Pug205GRD. on a 'Nearly' clean sheet in your first year of driving. icon_eek.gif

As mentioned above, only another 483,000 miles left to go laugh.gif

Just thought that as I have now reached my 2nd full year of owning a full UK driving licence I would update this thread.
So, whats happened to me in this 2nd year?
Virtually nothing!
Still havent hit anything (other than a low flying bollard at about 2mph)
The Hampshire Police Photographic and Video Society have not taken any good pics or vids of me this year,
Have now covered over 32000 miles in total.
Still own my second car, the 'slightly fiddled with' TD Escort. Despite it being quite leary, especially in the wet, it hasnt manged to kill me or anybody else.
The insurance has now dropped from £375 TPF&T to £290 TPF&T (This includes TP on ANY vehicle)
It hasnt been entirely uneventful though. Got a good chance to practice some cadence braking and collision avoidance when I found a car trying to turn into a layby by crossing a double white line just past the brow of a blind crest and corner. This was at about NSL speeds too. The only casualty was a bush and the tracking as I had no option but to take to the grossly overgrown grass verge.
I also spent 2 weeks driving without the aid of the clutch due to a common problem on Ford diesel gearboxes, namely that they are crap and not really built for the job. Still, I can now left-foot brake whilst cornering hard and up/down shift all at the same time with just 2 feet and hands!
The only downside is that to win a pushbike now I need to score 12 points instead of 6.
Let you in December 2006 what happens during my 3rd year of driving. During this year I will need to get my licence renewed on medical grounds so a friendly trip to the docs. will be in order soon.
Thanks to everybody here, its been a pleasure reading...

When you're experienced, you'll understand why that isn't generally a good idea.  icon_wink.gif

BTW, you can now legitimately claim that in the eyes of the law you are now an experinced driver, by virtue of having passed your test 2 years ago.

Some might argue that not having crashed makes you less experienced than someone who has.
Other than crashing, and/or advanced driving courses, and/or learning to ride a motorbike, if you really want go gain experinece quickly, try driving for 2 weeks without a clutch, that'll teach you the difference between looking ahead and planning ahead.

Just realised I have been driving about five and a half years now, time flies!

I admit to losing concentration a couple of times and coming close to a shunt, but as long as you remember them you realise when your concentration is likely to drift and can take appropriate measures.

Funny thing happened today - I came round a corner onto a long straight near my house, there was a string of four vehicles approaching me about halfway along - a Transit van third in line pulled out to overtake the other two heading right for me!  I slowed right up and so did the cars, the second one back flashed his lights and the van was able to pull back. BT van too

I been driving just short of 3 years.

Just 1 accident but managed to get out of it quite fortunately. Bendy country road with high hedges, coming around a bend and hit a big rock on the road and traffic had stopped ahead of me for whatever reason. Lost control of car for split second and then had the choice of smashing into the back of traffic ahead of me, going into lane and risk hitting on coming traffic or go into the hedge. I chose the hedge and ended up with 1 broken wing mirror and couple of scratches that polished out.. Good result considering it was potentially a very nasty accident.

Have now got another motoring event to report on:
Sometime between 00:15 01/01/2006 and 12:30 01/01/2006 somebody decide they wanted a closer look at the interior of my car. Nothing was taken other than an empty pouch of tobacco but the method of entry could be a costly one. Being a Mk.5 Escort, the top of the door is exposed. Now I have a nice boot print by the door handle and the top half of the door was bent outwards far enough to easily reach into the car without opening it.
This leaves me with a bit of a problem. Do I claim it on my insurance and lose my 3 years NCD (providing I dont crash between now and December) or just buy a door from a scrap yard. Either way I guess this is going to cost me.
I have straightened the door enough for the car to be drivable but im concerned that the integrity of the passenger side of the car would be comprimised if somebody decides to t-bone me. The damage may well encourage a repeat visit although I have taken steps to ensure the car wont move in a hurry.
Why cant there be an insurance fund set up to cover minor incidents like this? I would be happy to pay an extra £10 a year to cover this sort of eventuality because as it stands the victim ends up out of pocket whether they bother to claim the insurance or just pay up to get the job done...

Two points.

1) The insurance that you are searching for does exist - it's called protected NCB - which allows a single claim without jeopardising your NCB.

2) Are you sure that your NCB is affected by a theft claim - check your policy.

BTW, just to make you all feel sooooo much younger, I have been driving for 37 years and getting close to 1,000,000 miles.  When younger, I constantly had some points on my licence and once reached a total of 10.  However, the licence has been clean for over 11 years now.

1) No New Drivers Act in your day. wink.gif
2) I guess if you were a young driver now, you'd have ben well banned due to all the cameras (ignoring the New Drivers Act).

What is your Excess ?
£100
An escort door should be available for less than this,
and use the change to get no claims protection

congratulations on surviving two years!

I have had my bike license for three years now and i was surprised at how much (or little) car drivers pay attention to the road. If you want to improve your skills, go for two wheels. It is fun and opens your eyes to many hazards/danger spots and improves your driving no end......

Once again, well done.
