Hi,
The other morning I was driving through a set of lights with a red light Gatso camera on them (it has been super bright lately and am not sure about a flash). The road is 3 lanes wide and has 4 actual traffic lights (2 on each side, 2 are level with the stopping line and 2 are perhaps 10-20 meters in front (see attached image). Basically I was coming up to the lights in the right hand lane, as can be seen in the photo the van next to the car it is hard to see the left side traffic lights (note it is much harder than the photo since this is a google image taken on top of the car and I was in a lowish hatchback). The camera that is faulty is the one I have circled in the image furthest away on the right hand side. The fault is that the amber light does not work and shows up blank, meaning only red and green lights are visible in this traffic light (see video I filmed on foot, sorry about quality): https://i.imgur.com/WPapJVc.mp4 My question is, I'm worried that I went through on red as I didn't see the amber to warn me on the faulty light (and was already past being able to view the camera next to the stop line). A van next to me also went through around the same time. My question is if I were to get a red light ticket in the post would this be reasonable grounds to appeal it and if so how likely am I to be successful with such an appeal? Anyone know the law/rules on this? Thank you |

If there is a camera, it will be set up to detect vehicles crossing the stop line, next to the first (primary) set of lights. If you had crossed the line before the lights changed then no offence was committed and you have nothing to worry about.

When you say camera, I presume you mean traffic light, like the one you gave ringed.
Is there actually a camera at that junction? -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

If there's no camera then no problem, but you can email the local council to let them know a bulb is faulty and they'll get someone out to look and replace.

The camera cant be seen in the photo as it is 10m before the first right hand traffic light If there is a camera, it will be set up to detect vehicles crossing the stop line, next to the first (primary) set of lights. If you had crossed the line before the lights changed then no offence was committed and you have nothing to worry about. That is the issue, for the last 5+m before the stop line the only light visible is the faulty one (without amber). (note the left hand side lights were blocked by a van). Im not sure if i was caught for sure. I'm just asking if a faulty light of this nature is a valid defence if i was caught by the fixed red light camera |

However speculative threads are usually a waste of time, I suggest you want for 14 days and see if anything turns up in the post. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

I believe it's actually if no part of the OP's vehicle crossed the stop line on red...so long vehicles are somewhat disadvantaged in such matters. --Churchmouse |
