One of our neighbours had his front and back plates stolen last night - my wife heard something but didn't see anything out the window.
He has reported it to the police but I've said there's no need to change the reg and to just get replacement plates, Is this best advice. |

It's down to their attitude to risk. If the reg is not changed, there's a risk a cloned vehicle with the same number might be driving around. Personally I'd get a new reg.

He has reported it to the police but I've said there's no need to change the reg and to just get replacement plates, Is this best advice. They were only stolen to use for cloning. I would change the reg to avoid a lot of potential hassle, PCN's NIP's FPN's and of course getting pulled every time a copper sees you -------------------- All advice is given freely. It's all very well saying "get a new reg", but DVLA are very reluctant to do that unless you have cast-iron evidence the plates are being misused. It isn't a hassle-free solution.

I must be wrong but I always thought that if you were willing to pay the relevant fee, DVLA would happily provide a new vehicle reg. I can't think of any reason why it would refuse. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

Could fork out the £300 or so upwards for a "vanity" plate.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a dashcam so they can prove where they have been and put a distinctive sticker in the front and rear screens.

Distinctive sticker on the new plates that a camera system will pick up.
Photograph it with date etc, something to use as evidence if PCNs etc roll in. Report it to DVLA anyway, with police report number. I think they then stick a marker on your file. |

Why would you want your name to match stolen plates?

It isn't a hassle-free solution. Exactly! So you change your plates, which will presumably cost money for the DVLA, then buy the plates (more money) and take time off work to get them fitted (MM), then contact your insurance to update their records (time and hassle) and possibly get an increased premium (because your are now obviously a higher risk), and update your breakdown cover to use the new plate, and update any parking or road toll apps, and update your HR records at work. Hopefully you don't have your reg etched on your car windows! I think that i would be tempted to wait a bit! |

Not statistically significant on its own, but I've had plates stolen and absolutely nothing happened afterwards.
There is, of course, the chance that someone has stolen them 'to order' as they need to put them on an identical make/model/colour of car for some reason, but I suspect the majority of them just get chucked on whatever car they need to 'camouflage' at the time. And if they get used for something dodgy there's a good chance the fact that the plates don't match the car will mean that the police won't even bother contacting the 'owner'. If a white Fiesta is reported driving off without paying for fuel and the Police lookup the plates and see they're from a black BMW, then they see the plates were reported stolen a month ago, are they even going to bother sending someone round for a chat? And on top of this, I doubt these plates stay on a car for any length of time anyway. If you want to stay under the radar it would be sensible to frequently change the plates. Less time means less offences, which means less chance of the original owner being put in the frame. |

Fair comment Spandex, all the sorts of reasons why I would not be racing to get DVLA to change the reg number.
But we have seen a few, admittedly not many but a few cloned plates in the council forum. And it can get difficult without something positive to say "that is not my car" Different plates visually for starters, if the old had the blue panel and flag, avoid on the new ones and vice versa. Discreet stickers that will show on a close up of the plate from a CCTV camera. Or in a CEO's photo album Whatever is likely to help when council says that a police crime number is not enough. |

But we have seen a few, admittedly not many but a few cloned plates in the council forum. None for stolen plates though I think. Cloned plates have more design I reckon - stolen ones mostly opportunistic. And to be fair, absolutely nothing may come of this. But does your neighbour want to have the hassle of fighting possible multiple PCNs (not to mention anything from police) for want of a few simple precautionary measures. Which to be fair will not stop the potential for a PCN but will reduce hassle in getting them overturned. It's one thing when the plates turn up on a white Fiesta when they should be on a Black Golf. But if they appear on a Black Golf, some identifying marks will be useful. |

Just reading the Standard and there's a nasty story about a gang raiding a house and stealing jewellery from a woman and baby. They wore masks but police have their car (an Audi) and the reg on CCTV - but they say they don't know if it's cloned. Surely this would take them a few mins to find out via the DVLA.
