Hello all. Here goes: busy Christmas shopping car park, I had a minor bump with a car. We parked up and exchanged details. Tiny dents and scuffs on both cars. I admitted liability because I was reversing (at very low speed) and I *think* that the other car was stationery in a queue behind me. I feel a complete idiot, been driving 30 years with no incidents. Have phoned my insurer to sort out paintwork and dent. My insurers have contacted the other driver to do the same (standard practice apparently). I called the other driver this afternoon to check he had all the information he needed and if he was OK. He said yes and that he was taking up the offer to let my company sort out his repairs. He was an elderly gent and I feel bad that he has the hassle of this to sort out before Christmas (not even mentioning the hassle for me, but hey ....)

Question: am I being completely paranoid to think that I might be issued with a notice of driving without due care and attention? It's a whole new world to me. Thanks for reading.

Paranoia comes over from your post, loud and clear! tongue.gif

It sounds like a minor bump that the insurers are happy to sort out. There won't be any DWDCA implications. It may, however, impact upon your insurance premiums for a few years while you re-establish your NCD.

Get on with your life and enjoy Christmas.

Even if at fault, don't admit it, insurers really dislike that.

the other car was stationery

Don't panic! A prosecution is unlikely to result if you hit a stationary car, let alone an item of stationery, in the circumstances you describe. wink.gif

Thanks for the replies and reassurance. Yes for sure I'll have a higher premium. But I also feel bad that the other drivers' premium might go up too..?

It's daft because there've been instances where cars have run into or scraped mine and I've just had to suck it up, as they say. Sometimes it happens the other way round I guess.

@TheRookie ... I already did admit liability (I went to a Catholic school, still feel guilty for everything ohmy.gif ) to keep things simple I guess.

So am picturing the scene of elderly gent's son (if he has one) trying to persuade elderly dad to contact the police....!

@NeverMind ..... oh bloomin' eck of course it's stationAry. I am normally very careful about such matters. You got me bang to rights officer ;-)

His shouldn't go up. Your insurers will foot the bill, hence a possible effect on your NCD for a couple of years.

It's a situation that, at a guess, many hundreds of people face every day. It's very minor in the grand scheme of things. The other guy will just be letting his insurers deal with it and getting on with his life.

Thanks again. I suppose it's about learning and moving on. The solution is to avoid Christmas shopping in overly-stretched retail parks, methinks :-)

He has an incident on his record, it will go up, typically 5-10% for a non fault incident.

Yup
His fault for being there.
However, while his own insurance may go up (mine went up best part of 20% for a no fault minor shunt two days before renewal), other companies were happy to quote less despite the shunt.

If it can be proved, can he hold the OP liable for that increase? After all, why should one face an increase in premiums through absolutely no fault of their own.

Because statistically a motorist involved in a non-fault incident is more likely to go on and make a fault claim at a later date, compared to a motorist who has been involved in no incidents at all.
