So I was on cruise control in a 50 mph average speed limit zone (road is normally a 70), phone said I was doing 50, dashcam says I was doing 49. Somehow tripped a HADECS3 camera, no other cars around me, none of the cars further ahead or behind me appeared to set it off (and they all appeared to be doing roughly the same speed as me). Not really bothered as I've got the footage but I can't help but wonder, what on earth would cause these supposedly modern and reliable cameras to activate in these circumstances?

There is a fair number of reports about H3 flashing like that, the suspicion (unconfirmed) is it's some sort of test/check cycle.

If it was a HADECS3 it wouldn't have been an average speed zone, AIUI.

Existing Hadec within roadworks section which may have temp average speed cameras installed ?

It's a HADECS3 but due to roadworks they've installed SPECS to enforce the temporary 50 limit. I've made a SAR for the photos given its now free.

It is difficult to be sure because there are few technical details about how HADECS3 works.

But it is more likely just false positives. Pointing a radar at the ground to measure things at a (relatively) short distance is actually difficult to do, not least because there is loads of radio energy reflected that makes picking your target more difficult.

That's why conventional speed cameras have a vertically very narrow spread to minimise chatter.

You can get around the deficiencies of pointing radar at the ground using thing like pulse doppler radar, which is fairly cheap, and using expensive tech which produces less interference, which is expensive.

If you're flying a fighter jet then you want the expensive options. In the case of HADECS3 I suspect it is more viable just to have software inspect the images and rule out any false positives.

That is guesswork, but as I can't see any technical reason to test the flash I think it is the most plausible.

As above I doubt there are any photos recorded. They will have been almost instantly deleted when the images were automatically checked and the speed reading found to be inaccurate. There would be no point in storing images of cars not speeding.

I'm sure you're right but I also asked for all data logs as well, ultimately what I'm aiming for is an explanation of why the camera went off. In my mind, I'm entitled to drive down the road without having dazzling lights go off behind my car for no reason. If I stood on a bridge over a main road randomly flashing a light that bright, in the middle of the night, for no legitimate reason, I'm sure plod would have words.
