The current purpose of the Flame Pit is described thus:
Want an argument? Have a topic that doesn't belong anywhere else? Started one in some other place and wonder where it's gone? Well this is it - the place for all the off-topic and non-PC discussions and rants. This seems to result in some confusion when threads are started solely to seek help with off-topic subjects. These OPs are clearly not looking for an argument, and we tend to moderate them on the basis that they're "help" threads like those in the other sections of the forums - to the apparent bewilderment of those who take a pop in those threads and subsequently find their posts vanishing. One way around this would be to effectively split the Flame Pit, by starting a new off-topic thread section, leaving the Flame Pit solely for the use it's name suggests - a place for rants and arguments (still withing the forum terms of use, I should point out). If you have any views on this please use the poll, and/or post your comments in this thread. If you want to say something but prefer not to do so in public you are of course free to PM me. -------------------- Regards,

Having more than one sub-forum for the category of "if you're not sure where to post it, post it here" will stop the mods getting bored...

I think it would be a good idea to keep the flame pit for those that wish to blow their top on any subject, and start another forum for those seeking help on anything else. Such as, "My cat is on the roof, should I call the police or the RSPCA?"
-------------------- Peter
What I'd like to see police/local authorities do is deal with important issues and not these sorts of victimless crimes when society is riddled with problems. If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for? 'The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.' - Albert Einstein |

Should we be going out of our way to encourage herberts to come here with random problems?

I think theres enough sections already. New posters already seem to have difficulty deciding where to put their topic. Plus theres only ever 2 or 3 at a push new topics in the flame pit per day. If a new one was created, it would be very underused I feel.

Should we be going out of our way to encourage herberts to come here with random problems? I wasn't thinking of calling it Dear Deidre, but I take your point. We'd have to take some care to describe it in a way that didn't encourage any random questions (of which we have an ample supply already). -------------------- Regards,

It's a good question but a lot of OPs are already confused by the forum headings
Rather than add an extra heading, how about replacing the "Cameras" forum by "Off-topic discussions" or a similar heading ? There have been a few OPs recently thinking that it means "detected by camera" Topics generating more heat than light can be moved to the aptly titled Flame Pit |

Hows the weather down there today? 13C and sunny, thanks. I see yours is more 8C and pissing down, so it looks like summer's arriving for both of us. -------------------- Regards,

Surely it would be easier to give GB his own section. That would remove 75% of the rant threads from the flame pit is one go

During term time when I'm studying I find this site much more interesting lol This post has been edited by glasgow_bhoy: Fri, 11 May 2012 - 13:10 |

That would remove 75% of the rant threads from the flame pit is one go Well if needs must OR just like... ban me from the site during uni term time. That would make my life sooo much easier. During term time when I'm cleaning I find this site much more interesting lol Sorry GB, could not resist it! My 2pworth... The forum is generally about motoring, with individual sections on certain legalities around motoring. The flame pit is for any old cobblers, but a serious query on a non-motoring related topic might just see an informed poster offer an enlightened view. It is one of my favourite online places just as it is. |

Leave well alone, the erratic moderation is one of the joys of the Flame Pit. I envisage SP looking down from his domain as Zeus did, smiting posts at random as if with lightning bolts. And best of all, it's a mystery: "Where did that post go?"
Also risk of losing critical mass, the post count is low enough as it is. (I an concerned that Fredd now appears to have some leanings to democracy, that will never do) 0700 + sun! |

Oh lord, you made me smile. That will never do, I shall have to smite thee.
