42 deaths of which 30 involve pursuits and deaths of ten innocent parties
My personal view is that these should be prosecuted as manslaughter rather than death by dangerous driving

Whether there was any wrong doing by the police or not?

Who decided they were innocent deaths and hadn't contributed to their own demise?

Are you suggesting the Police should be prosecuted for manslaughter when its the pursued car that is the direct cause of the accident?

Police officers and/or those who gave authority to pursue, presumably.

And it's a point that I'd likely share. Have a look at the plethora of police reality TV programmes being broadcast on Freeview, plenty evidence of dangerous driving by the police.

Why do we have a police force if they cannot chase criminals? The story tells that it was the vehicle being chased that caused the deaths directly 20 of them brought about their own demise, and IMO 10 were murdered . To me forget manslaughter if you cause a death in the commission of a crime having no regard for other peoples safety it is murder . And I know that would require a hardening of the liberal views of society and a change in the law. That will have to happen eventually or we become the old wild west

Ignoring the obvious point that police pursuit drivers are trained to a much higher standard than you or I could drive in those circumstances, what would you suggest? That they should never pursue dangerous/drunk/drugged drivers, or those fleeing after robberies/assaults/car thefts/whatever, if there's any risk at all to third parties?

I never said that police officers shouldn't pursue offenders.

Just that more thought needs to be taken into consideration with things like these. A criminal may be travelling rather fast to evade the plod, but, if the plod is following quite close behind, just how much faster is the criminal likely to be?

For example, I don't find it remotely acceptable that police appear to have carte blanche to do stuff like 85mph through a residential area during a pursuit. You make a good point about training being advanced, but training can't help them (or others) defy the laws of physics

No it wasn't but I'm sure I've seen a few newspaper articles about police cars used for non-driving recreational purposes

I put it to you all that statistics like this will continue to grow untill such time that the standard response of "joe public", criminal or otherwise, is to stop when the blue lights flash at them.

If the Police adoted the policy of not pursuing cars that dont stop chaos will reign, think about the not chasing "scrotes" on mopeds without helmets...

It is always sad when innocent folk are injured or worse, but its not the fault of the police.

Seen just now as I enjoy a slap up meal at the local chippy.
Police car trying to get past drivers plainly ignoring them.
Then an ambulance following, again cars just carrying on and not stopping.
Those drivers would be first to moan about a lack of a decent response time when they’re in trouble themselves.

I see it a lot in Lincolnshire

It's quite a challenge knowing the right time to stop

Too early and everyone else in front of the ambulance will sail past -

Wasn't it the fact a few years ago that the same number of people were killed by drunk drivers as were killed by police vehicles? Something like 18 deaths each IIRC.

Rather than pose rhetorical questions and state vaguely recollected numbers, how about providing verifiable sources if you want a sensible discussion?

While it's tempting, I've only done that once and that was when my wife was in the ambulance, it's not always possible to know the full circumstances.

I agree some drivers were lousy, even when it dropped me at a set of red lights (I stopped) it didn't take me long to catch back up.

Didn't follow it because I was going to the crash scene to collect an uninjured passenger but there are few experiences more unpleasant than passing an ambulance going the other way to the hospital, knowing that your heavily pregnant daughter is inside

To revise my point, just why is it acceptable for 130mph+ police pursuits to happen in residential areas?

Why over-egg it? The 130mph was on a wide straight road with a bus lane either side, at 3am.

Prosecuting Miss Gwen Henshaw, said: "There appeared to be four men in the Golf and the car accelerated away from the police vehicle hitting speeds of up 95 mph in a 30mph residential area.

"He passed through a junction and a red light and continued on Wellington Road North hitting at least 120mph and a further red light was crossed at speeds of about 80mph.
