We have passed the 5000 user mark, I thought a word of thanks and congratulations to Mika, Fredd and the other Moderators was in order.

It is surprising that it has taken up till April 2006 to reach 5000.

I was confidently projecting this figure to be reached by Christmas 2005. For some reason, the flow of new members reduced substantially from August 2005 and in fact has not picked up again despite more publicity than ever before.

Very strange??

Not everyone who registers successfully follows thorugh with verifying and activating their account. If the account isn't activated within 5 days then it's deleted. The number of accounts is therefore always going to be greater than the number created.

Your post is #101641. Other than waiting until the odometer hits 100,000 and seeing which was the latest post, is there any simple way to tell whose post made it 100,000?

Well, I guess you could argue that the 100,000th post has already been made - it's only because some have been deleted after they were written that the total in the database is lower wink.gif
However the answer to your question is no, I won't be able to tell for sure which post it was, unless there are no deletions between checks before and after the magic number is reached. I found you by reading the MCN article even though I haven't ridden a bike for 20 odd years. My biker neighbour lent me a copy when I mentioned in conversation over the garden hedge, that I had been zapped in the town centre and was thoroughly p155ed off mad.gif and staring at points 7,8 & 9 on my licence. Paid up for membership immediately and currently going down the PACE route for starters!

Thanks for all the guidance to date!

I agree - that doubtless includes about 230 "bogus" users (unidentified spiders, spambots, etc).

"They" can read any post in the public forums any time they like - just the same as anybody else - so why would they go to that kind of trouble?

We use a large list of known spiders and bots and exclude these from the statistics. There are many others, however, both legitimate and nefarious, that aren't in the list, and these appear as Guests. I'd observe also that we've had a few spam registrations recently, and doubtless for each one of these there are dozens of visits by a spambot (that won't identify itself as such for obvious reasons!). So basically:

Hello.

I registered on 9 Aug, fully expecting to be sharing an NIP with you for a scamera offence on 5 Aug. I'm happy to say I've received nothing so far and as it's my car and I've owned it and my current home for over two years, I reckon I'm in the clear...

Having spent those two weeks reading threads and preparing for my NIP, I decided I'd join properly and say what a fine job you're doing in the face of the advance of mechanised law enforcement.

bearing in mind we dont have the 18 million pounds spent each year by the scamerratti on propoganda and our existance is mainly word of mouth, It is therefore a magnificent indication of how p*ssed people are.

Just under 10% of registrations to a free forum that were started were either not completed (verified) or have been banned (dwarf pr0n spammers)?
Someone happens upon the site, thinks "ooh, this seems vaguely interesting", starts the registration process, but in between that and responding to the verification email opens a dwarf pr0n spam email and doesn't bother completing the process.
If you look at the proportion of registered members that are "active" - e.g. have visied the site in the last month, 10% uncompleted regsitrations (and dwarf pr0n spammers) doesn't sound unrealistic to me.

In the last few months there's been a dramatic increase in the number of spam registrations; in fact around November I would say there were as many spam registrations as there were genuine ones. While these were all weeded out either before (mostly) or after they managed to make their first and last pathetic post, they clearly have a substantial impact on the genuine registered user numbers (which don't contain spammers) compared with the user ID count (which does).

For the time being a combination of better Captcha screening used by the new software version and use of the custom "Verification Number" step during registration has drastically reduced successful spam registrations (to one in the past two months, in fact!). However already spammers are using cheap labour in developing countries to bypass anti-spam methods that try to distinguish between humans and automated registration tools.

This is a continuing battle, which unfortunately mostly inconveniences the genuine user. angry.gif

Aye, and the moderators and admins. I suspect 80% of the members never see the spam ones due to the collective just about 24 hour cover laugh.gif

One day, someone will pull the router plug on the "developing" world and let them "develop" their own "Internet" to spam.
