Could an unmarked police car (Hyundai IX35), with a plain clothed officer (i.e. not wearing the full gear or hi-vis) use a hand-held radar gun (or equivalent) whilst roadside? The guy was sat in the car watching the traffic. Back windows were up and tinted.
Under the circumstances would they need to be visible? |

The only issue I could see from your description would be if the speed detector was being used through a glass window.
No need to be a Police Officer in uniform (that would negate just about all mobile speed vans!) or to be "visible", though you appear to have seen them. Sure it wasn't some sad person sat in their car holding a hair dryer? Don't laugh - I've seen it! |

Also was playing on my mind considering it was an unmarked car etc. Is it possible for the handheld devices to catch speeders from behind glass or in the car? Under these circumstances, if it was police, would they not have had to catch me up to pull me over etc |

There are non-police and non-sad reasons to do that, the DfT does quite a few traffic speed surveys, it's also something various contractors will do when carrying out a road / traffic safety review for a highways authority. In such scenarios you typically go out of your way to hide / not be visible as you want to detect the natural speed of traffic, rather than the lower speed you would record if people thought there were any speed enforcement going on.

Is it possible for the handheld devices to catch speeders from behind glass or in the car? Absolutely yes. Through an open window is an absolute non issue, through glass isn't recommended but the device does work and display a speed however the risk of an erroneous reading increases. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

They don’t have to stop you at the time. There's a postal process for this.
