Trust a highways authority to spoil peoples' fun- in this case by jacking a bridge up by 8 inches to protect those who can't read height restriction signs from themselves.

Presumably it'll also be RIP for the venerable internet site 11foot8.com - I can't see 12foot4.com, with no mayhem, catching on.

I read that on a YouTube channel where a particularly low bridge in Australia (4m, which is a tad over 13') was similarly snaring victims: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9kLZHBa_tc. 11Foot8 is now 12Foot4 (which is still pretty low). Maybe the Aussie bridge is the New Pretender.

As a long time follower of the channel it's a sad day..... I live in hope that there enough trucks over 12'4" to keep it going.

To be fair the signs used in the US do seem a little inconspicuous.

The site owner did a video during the works. He did say in the comments that the sensors that changed the lights to red & flashed the "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign had reduced the incidents to about 3 a year from the almost monthly occurences.
I haven't looked for a link, but somebody had an 'opening' when a TV crew was there doing a feature on the bridge.

Well #147 was at the end of March, and we're on #150 now, so it still seems to be about one a month. I'm heartened to see that #147 was a full-height truck designed for the US maximum height limit of 13'6", so there should still be scope for carnage in the future - just fewer rental panel vans. smile.gif

Maybe moving traffic contraventions over there should be contacted out to Peter Thomas, the locals would soon fall in line.

Wow! Really is little brother at just 10'6". With such low clearance, I'm surprised they don't have the overheight sensors and flashing warning signs.

I shall defer to your accurate stats, he did mention a marked reduction that I must have misread. He also mentioned that youtube had demonetized his channel, so he now relies on Patreon for his income. It was also noted that RV aircon units will still be fair game even if the box trucks are now safe. Maybe the various rental companies clubbed together to pay for the raising, I'd imagine their insurance premiums will go down somewhat.

"Jacking up the bridge" isn't as easy as it may sound. It also requires altering the railway's gradient(s), probably for many hundreds of metres. The traditional solution in the uK is to lower the road.

Even that can be a major undertaking - apart from re-routeing of all the utilities under the road, putting in effective drainage for the newly created pool can be very expensive. For 8 inches or so I'd guess it's probably easier to regrade the track just by lifting the rails and re-tamping the ballast, even if it is over several hundred metres.

Indeed just like this the channel owner had fantastic access to the whole process.

A simple solution to the low bridge hazard, would be to install a metal frame - with the same dimensions as the bridge opening - and place it 20m before bridge.

Any lorry which crashed into it; would likely suffer less damage and could be driven away.

But who cares about damage to the high vehicle. The main advantage is that it won't damage the actual bridge or get wedged or hold up traffic awaiting recovery.

I think you'll find that such a sacrificial girder is/was installed at that bridge, and many other low bridges. While not 20m away, they do, indeed serve to protect the bridge itself by taking the brunt of any impact while not being part of the structure of the bridge itself.

"Sacrificial girder"? That's the Holy Can-Opener itself you're talking about there; I don't think it sacrifices itself that much!

The problems with raising railway track levels in the UK are numerous. the planning alone will take months; re routeing trains if possible, getting crews with route knowledge, replacment bus services, planning the engineering resources, as Fredd says physically raising the track for several hundred metres, tamping machines, ballast trains, re routeing linside cables, possibly 25kv overhead line equipment...

But then if we do nothing we have the hidden cost of closing the railway every time there's a bridge strike causing many hours of delays to trains while the bridge is inspected.

A big like.

Agreed, that 'sacrificial' girder has taken down some pretty hefty vehciles (not just can opening Ryder trucks) with little more than scratched paint to show for it.
