I received a NIP S172 today and on ‘Part 5. declaration’ it’s asking for my job title and email address.
I was just wondering if there was a particular reason for requesting this information as it doesn’t specifically relate to the committed offence and I don’t see how it is relevant. Does anyone know what would happen if I omitted this information or supplied one of my spam email addresses that I don’t care about? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, I don’t have a problem providing it per-say but if I have the choice I would rather not supply any non relevant information. |

Statute does not require it. I would leave it blank.

Probably of more use where the notice is addressed to a company. I doubt anything will come of it if you don’t include that information but I cannot guarantee it is legally bulletproof not to.

Job title is normally required when the person filling in the Notice is replying on behalf of a company, same with the email. |

Thank you for the quick replies.
I will send back tomorrow without the job title or email. |

The statute says:
"The person keeping the vehicle shall give such information as to the identity of the driver as he may be required to give by or on behalf of a chief officer of police..." I cannot see how job title and e-mail address is a critical factor when the identity of the driver is concerned. Although the legislation says the keeper shall give "such information as to the identity of the driver as he may be required to" I cannot see that it is reasonable for the keeper to be asked anything the police fancy asking him. Unless there is any precedent I think it would be a very harsh court that convicts a keeper under Section 172 so long as he has provided the driver's name, address, DOB and driving licence number. |

I deal with a lot of NIP/S172 requests every week from forces across the country, (emergency vehicles on transplant related tasks), some forces, Avon & Somerset for example ask for my date of birth, licence number and job title, I give them my job title but never my licence number or date of birth. Never had a follow up requesting the missing details. |

Hasn't there been a thread when somebody was prosecuted for S172 because he hadn't provided his date of birth or driver number ?

Does anyone know what would happen if I omitted this information or supplied one of my spam email addresses that I don’t care about? As for the email address, it doesn't say which email address, so any will do. As a website owner, I can receive emails using an infinite number of email addresses using my domain's URL, and all would be equally valid for notification purposes. --Churchmouse |

I don't know what all the fuss is about.
The sole reason for requesting an email address is so we have a quick and direct contact if there is anything that needs clarification. A phone number is just as useful. Neither is mandatory. Leave it blank or fill it in, your choice. |
