BBC News:

QUOTE
Members of the "yellow vests" protest movement have vandalised almost 60% of France's entire speed camera network, the interior minister has said.
:
:
Some protesters feel speed cameras are solely a revenue-generating measure which takes money from the poor.

So the "yellow vests" either believe the rich don't speed, or the rich are not prosecuted for speeding...

Or they believe that fixed fines are regressive, impacting the rich much less (or practically, not at all) than the poor?

The counter argument of course is that when it comes to penalty points, we're all as rich (or as poor) as each other.

It's not really a counter argument to the regressive nature of the fines, though - particularly in France, where penalties for minor speeding offences mainly consist of the fine, with a very small number of points.

So here we have Staffordshire, with literally hundreds of cameras, and in Durham, none, I believe. Here where I live in Cheshire, there are a few, but not every lamppost like they are in Staffordshore. So is one far more at risk on the roads in Durham than Staffordshire ? I don't think so. These malign devices were installed to collect money when "netting-off" was allowed. When this was withdrawn, the cash incentive moved to the "Speed Awareness" course, at £100 a pop. It's like penalty charges for parking and bus lanes, a cash earner for the councils. London councils make millions out of this.

Penalties for speeding France are much like those in the UK and the margin of tolerance is laid down in law albeit not so tolerant as the UK version. French licences start with 12 points and have points deducted but some can be recovered by attending a course.. The link below should easy to follow.

The detail in the post above about the cameras by the GJ is misleading. It includes cameras that were covered over but not damaged and 266 cameras were degraded four times.

Link below to the actual figures with very interesting stats. Avon & Somerset top most of the lists by a large margin. My local area comes a close second!

Speeding Awareness course fees go to the course operators, mostly private companies, with a very small part to the police authority. AA runs my local ones.

Most people wouldn't consider £35 to be a "very small part" of a ~£100 course fee.

At the same time, I'd rather speed enforcement were paid for by those who speed, rather than from my council tax.

Especially when it comes up to approximately £50 million.

So now we know why the police won't bother with burglaries and other property crime; there's no money in it for them !

Hmm, didn't realise the French had reduced the normal speed limit on most 2-way roads from 90kph to 80.

It was apparently one of the original "gillet jaune" gripes. (More than the speed cameras, it was the speed reduction.)

A couple of years ago when Sarcose was the president, there was some unrest where vast numbers of speed cameras were set fire to. Sarcose's first comment was something along the lines of "what about the cash flow?"; not a word about road safety. Says it all really.
