Today i was driving down the road past the town local council centre where i believed i had accidentally scraped a car (The roundabout is dangerously close to a parking bay) as i heard a squeaking sound, as i heard this sound i got out my car to investigate what the sound may have been and checked the other car, which did have a small scratch to the side of it but my car had absolutely 0 damage and no paint swaps.

I thought it would be best to leave my details anyway, however as i had no pen and paper i went in to report it in the local council centre as thats where the parking bay was, and asked if they would pass the details on to the driver if they come in with an enquiry as to the scratch...have i done the wrong thing if i dont 100% believe i caused the scratch? And will the council pass this letter on to the police? The woman added more information as to the time and place which shows different handwriting whilst i stuck by my word of me not knowing if it was actually myself who caused the accident? Im quite worried..

i might iterate on the point that when i wrote my details down, she then in her handwriting wrote other details down, where i was very clear on the point that i was unsure if i did in fact scrape this car..

and a police car followed me through 3 roads about an hour later..coincidence or?

i just dont fancy getting an NIP For careless driving when i dont believe that is the case.

Please stop posting this "I'm so worried" garbage in the Speeding section. You being worried about the remote possibility of your latest indiscretion having been observed is not the same as having an active case. If you have "what should I have done" queries then they belong here, in the Flame Pit.

Fredd

Whether it is an insurance job depends how precious the other person is about their car, whether they even notice the scratch and/or if they fancy a free car repair.

Seeing as you admit you may have hit a parked vehicle you are bang to rights on that front.

Technically if you didn't exchange details at the scene belt and braces you should report to police ASAP and in any case within 24hrs. Next time leave the note on their windscreen.

Personally I would not bother as you made some effort and worst case scenario the police will just provide insurance details.

Coincidence the police were following you, a minor scrape does not merit any of their attention.

Being a driver old or new the important thing is to look back on any scrape or near miss and think, what could you have done better? Don't blame the parking space. People park in all manner of stupid places, but their poor driving doesn't mean you can drop your standards.

Think what could you have done better in terms of positioning, anticipation, speed and observations. Recognising where you went wrong and changing your driving is how you become safe and skilled.

The most dangerous drivers are the ones who have an excuse for everything.

If, as Fredd says, you are panicking all the time perhaps look at advanced driver courses or get ideally a trained driver like police, ambulance, fire service if you know anyone to sit in with you and give you feedback.

Don't need to be to know that the moment you leave a note, the other party can easily take the view that the old supermarket scrape that has been buggin them can be repaired FOC.
Devil and deep blue sea, if you hit another vehicle you have to give details or report to police but if not sure ?
OP has tried to do the right thing but is reliant on the other person's honesty.

Mind you, I have problems with not being sure.... scrapes and knocks sound very loud inside a car and was obviously sure enough to stop and check.
