I was waiting at these traffic lights on Saturday last week:
https://goo.gl/maps/9Js9c29PBh149T3y8 There were two cars in front of me. There are lights on the road and in front and they were different colours. Unfortunately I don’t recall which was red and which was green. I assume the ones right in front were red and the lights on the other side green. It was 4am and I was honestly totally confused by these lights. The two guys in front of me when through and then I started to go. I crossed the white line but stopped as I wasn’t sure and there was a car coming across. I then continued on when the car alongside and behind me started moving. I haven’t gotten a PCN yet - it could still arrive as there are 14 days but am I likely to get one if it was a red light? Or would they realise I stopped even though it was after the line and not send me a penalty notice? |

You won't get a PCN, you may get a Notice of Intention to Prosecute (NIP) that would need to be served on the registered keeper within 14 days of the event.
That said as I can't see any camera's at that location how do you think they will know that an offence may have occurred anyway? As this isn't a live case it will probably get moved to the flame pit forum. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

There is a camera right there. But yes NIP sorry I what I meant.
I guess my question is am I likely to get an NIP even though I stopped after the white line? Assuming the light was red in the first place and camera was active. |

If the light was red and you crossed the stop line then yes. It would have flashed and you should have noticed that?

I can now see there is a camera HOUSING it may not have a camera in it.
If there is a camera there then it will snap you as you commit the offence by crossing the white stop line (with any part of the car). It was daytime. And the position of the camera to where I was stopped made it not possible to even see the camera.
Is there any discretion from the police in a situation where you stop after crossing the line because you realise you made a mistake? Is this automatically going to be 3 points? No option of a course with red light cameras? |

Yes they have discretion but a ‘mistake’ probably won’t be sufficient.
Courses are available for red light offences. (Otherwise 3 points £100) -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

There may be different ways of detecting whether the line has been crossed but I don't see any buried sensors around the stop line.
That would be the normal way (that I know of) a red light camera works. |

There may be different ways of detecting whether the line has been crossed but I don't see any buried sensors around the stop line. Use the Google time machine option and they reappear - here. Resurfacing can hide them... -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver
