Hello all.
A couple of months ago, in the London Borough of Camden, I noticed that a traffic island was installed, but without any posts or lights. Some weeks back they installed on that island what appears to be an ANPR system. I am not sure if it looks both ways or one way (can walk past it again and find out if deemed necessary). Approximately 50 yards down the road, there is this 20 mph sign. I stood back and noted that there is also a camera attached to the top of the sign and each time a vehicle exceeded 20 mph, the vehicle's plate would flash up on the panel, as per the image. Is this a live installation or a testing situation? I noted this morning that the camera at the top of the sign or panel, is gone. |

It's just a variation of the speed limit

That is what I initially thought, however, why is there a little camera attached, just above the sign...unless I am getting it wrong? My assumption is that the speed is linked to the ANPR, which might be wrong? ANPR comes first then the sign.
Another observation I made is that if one car's plate flashed up, then the next couple of cars behind would take note and anchor the brakes and for a while (until there was a break at the lights further up I guess), most would drive at 20 mph. I guess seeing your reg up on screen like that makes it noticeable, although I guess this takes people's eyes off the roads, where they should be, but anyway. Well how's it going to display your VRM unless it has a camera for the number plate recognition? I doubt there's any connection between camera system and speed measurement radar, other than maybe inhibiting VRM display unless excess speed is detected, they're just set up to have a similar field of view.

Good point - that is why you are the expert and I am a mere novice.
Thank you for the input. Not sure why I thought ANPR would be connected to the sign. |

Basic human psychology. If it knows who you are, you're more likely to comply. Even if it is a dumb computer that forgets your registration after five seconds.
Same as if you put up a picture of some eyes on the wall. People are more likely to do what they are meant to because they are being watched, even if all the evolutionary benefit of your pre frontal cortex tells you it's utter crap. |

Similar thing installed in my local sainsbury’s - which also pops up with your exit time to avoid a charge.
