I was followed by a police car on the motorway. He claims I was speeding at 80mph, whch he says he caught on his bodycam.
I assume his bodycam was recording his speedometer. But I can't think this is a legal test of speeding, as it's not electronic, and his speedometer could be faulty? I wasn't issued a ticket.he said he was going to report me. I have a feeling he was trying to wind me up. So can you be caught by a police car's speedometer? |

Have you had a speed awareness course / motorway awareness course in the past 3 years? Was the speed limit NSL, or had it been set to a lower variable limit? This post has been edited by 4hS6TcBkX: Mon, 6 Jul 2020 - 10:24 |

Police have to get their speedometers calibrated No, they don’t. Speedometers in specialist vehicles are often calibrated but those in normal patrol vehicles often are not. There is no legal requirement that the speedometer be calibrated. If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t give your guesses as fact. It’s Rule 3 that you agreed to. Police have to get their speedometers calibrated How does that square with them only requiring a single officers opinion (with no other evidence at all) that the car was speeding in order to gain a conviction (this being a motorway)? -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

That is a very good point. Apologies, forgot that was the case for motorways. If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t give your guesses as fact. It’s Rule 3 that you agreed to. That is very much true. It was my understanding from prior research that it was required - my apologies, thank you for the clarification. How does that square with them only requiring a single officers opinion (with no other evidence at all) that the car was speeding in order to gain a conviction (this being a motorway)? The statutory bar on conviction based solely on the opinion of the witness does not apply on motorways. That does not mean that the opinion of a witness would be sufficient to persuade the court beyond any reasonable doubt, or that the CPS would even run with it (some time ago, their published guidance was not to). -------------------- Andy

I was well aware of that, hence my wording of required (legally) as opposed to say ‘sufficient’.
