There's a Romanian guy going around making a living out of viewing cars for sale, then pouring oil(or another substance) onto the exhaust when the seller isn't looking causing the car to start bellowing out smoke. He then says there's a problem with the car and demands to buy it at a rock bottom price. A lot of sellers fall for this and they get scammed.
This particular individual tried this with one of the members of my car club, but he caught on and asked the guy to leave before anything happened. He shared some of his details, and looking at his facebook profile it's clear he does this for a living. Posing next to the cars he took on any particular day and stating in the comments how they pour oil onto the exhaust to scam sellers. Plus what he paid and what the car is actually worth. He's also posted a video of him doing 130mph on a public road. Surely this is overwhelming evidence for the police to charge him? What's the best way to get him reported so real action would be taken instead of it just being another reported case going nowhere? |

Police have certainly taken action against people who have posted their own speed videos online.
I would think they would need to catch the guy in action on the smoke scam. But how to get the Old Bill to take action apart from report and hope ?? |

I don't care about the speed video, but making a living out of scamming people out of their hard earned money needs to be put to a stop. There is already talk of people going round and 'sorting him out'. |

All I can see on the scam side is hearsay and the guy's own admission.
One witness who may be prepared to stand up in court. And be faced with the guy saying that some oil got on the exhaust when the guy checked the levels and the witness got all nadgy about it. Whatever is on his FB page can also be explained away as Walter Mitty fantasy. Whatever we think on modern policing, they need some evidence that will stick. |

Wiltshire police are looking at this issue. There was a piece in the Swindon Advertiser last week about it.

Dial 101 and report it. You can “make” the police take any particular action.

If I'm reading the auto translated posts on Facebook correctly he's claiming to get cars worth £5k for £1.5k. Would anyone drop the cars price that much based on some random punter telling them the engine is goosed?
Call me cynical but this sounds like another urban legend type story. -------------------- If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

How long does it take the tailpipe to get hot enough to do that do you think?
I guess if you do it (whatever 'it' is) to enough people some will fall for it, even 1:20 would be a result. That or its a spoof account by someone in St Petersburg or from Britain First! Yes this guy has gone through all the trouble to make the whole thing up, countless of times and tried the same thing with the guy in my car club, presumably as a gag... This guy belongs to a group of people who does this for a living. |

Wouldn't be surprised if the guy does it for a living.
Or that people can be gullible enough to fall for it. But really, you would think that someone selling their pride and joy would have some idea that smoke suddenly pouring out from the engine bay, after the "ever so understanding and knowledgeable guy" had been poking around under there, wasn't quite kosher. Despite the phrase in the first post "He then says there's a problem with the car and demands to buy it at a rock bottom price" they agree to sell at the price, there is nothing to force them into it. Two minutes reflection on, it was fine before and smoking now but he still is offering to take it off my hands should be throwing up huge warning flares. |

This guy belongs to a group of people who does this for a living. Fair enough if you personally know someone who's experienced this. I had a quick Google and there are indeed a few reports. At least the guys has made it easy for Police to identify the cars he has bought! -------------------- If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.
