Hi, my car insurance is due for renewal shortly but first I would like to ask on the forum about business use. I have been retired for 5 years, I used to be a carpet fitter. I still like to do the odd small job for friends and family if they need my help. I Don't get paid, money doesn't come into it and it gives me something to do.

However someone recently mentioned that I should have business use on my insurance because if I was pulled over by the police for any reason even a random stop, and they notice I have tools of the trade in my boot the first thing they will ask me is do you have business cover, and I say no, I could be prosecuted for driving without the correct insurance.

I did try to get a couple of quotes online but I can't find cover for business use if i am also retired. What do you guys think, I don't want to run the risk of getting on the wrong side of the law.
Regards,
Clarke

The trouble is for site visits you would need class2 business cover (the expensive one) not intrasite class1 that’s near enough or actually free.

As you aren’t doing the fitting in the course of a business you clearly do not need business cover, many people take tools to help friends out, I help with car repairs yet it’s not a business, nor is it anything I do as part of my work anyway.

Assuming the OP is self employed (Not a director of his own LTD) it would normally Class 1 / Class A business Use.

As a very vert rough summary Class 1 / A covers you for using the car for your own business. Class 2 would normally be where you're using the car in connection with your Employers Business.

Most Insurers would be happy for a tradesman doing site visits or travelling to various places of business using Class 1 / A

Very very roughly Class 2 is generally used for Estate Agents and the like on pre arranged sales calls.

" " " Class 3 is generally for sales calls when the appointments are not pre arranged eg door knocking.

Most Insurers are happy for office workers and civil servants etc travelling to different offices on Class 1 / A

Contacting the Insurer would be a good start.

Typically to have DoV on a UK policy you need to be a UK resident, which means you can't drive a non-UK vehicle anyway.

You’re a UK resident. Presumably you could drive my car if I was visiting the UK?

No I could not, as The Motor Vehicles (International Circulation) Order 1975 does not provide an exemption from the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 when the driver is a UK resident. There are some limited exceptions, there's a good summary of the legal position here: https://www.hughesguides.com/foreignvehicles.pdf

I was more interested in the insurance position. My car doesn’t appear on the MID either.

The insurance would be fine. Doesn't change the fact that if a UK resident drives a non-UK car outside one of the limited exceptions, he'd be in bother for no tax, not registering the car with DVLA, not displaying UK number plates, no MOT...

So I suppose I could drive your car if you were visiting the UK, but I would commit a number of offences if I did.

+1. Just ask the insurer. Even if you are technically right why potentially argue your case in the back of a police car or after an accident.

If you have a decent NCB and no at fault accidents insurance is cheap whatever you add to it anyway.

............It's handy for taking another person's car (which is SORNed and uninsured) for its MoT though.

DOV ??
Only if your policy allows uninsured vehicles to be driven.
Few years back, the insurance policy I had, included DOV on any vehicle my licence covered.
I checked with them and they were quite happy that it included my wife's car which was then on SORN and uninsured. Happy to drive it to MOT.

Next Company I was with specifically said other vehicles covered (3rd party) only if insured. Meant I had to get insurance to cover my daughter's car when purchased so I could drive it home, wasn't sensible to insure it in her name at the time.

New policy I have just taken out includes DOV, on insured vehicles but excludes vehicles belonging to spouse/family

Exactly. I have two policies; one for my motorhome with DOV providing other vehicle was insured in its own right, and my car policy which has DOV with no such stipulation either on the certificate or the policy document.

I was glad about that as I was recovering a car for my partner's daughter from Oxfordshire to Sussex. Her (the daughter's) father had passed away quite suddenly and she was going to take ownership of the car. She wasn't insured to drive it and, although we checked with her late dad's insurance company who confirmed the policy would stand, I was happier to drive it back under DOV on my policy knowing that I was covered even if the insurance company denied this later. I did check on the askMID web site as well to do all I could to make sure all was in order.

Sweated buckets all the way round the M25 as the air-con didn't work. Poked the button in and out a few times yesterday and it started working fine! Bummer!

If Plod stop and ask you, you are popping out to get a pint of milk, it's the easiest answer.

Even if it’s not the truth?

I'd suggest it would become the truth, after being stopped.

Not how any of my insurers have classified it.

I agree that insurers do not always classify in as Cat1 or Cat2. Here is an extract from my insurance certificate (my emphasis)

travel between home and permanent place of business
or employment. Use for the Policyholder and named
drivers in connection with their business or profession,
