Was driving on the street and suddenly see "Road Closed - Access Only". As the pub I go to was there, I passed by but there was no parking until I reached a sign that finally said "Road Closed", by which point I did a U-Turn and proceeded back. As I was doing this a car coming the other way very aggressively approaches me and stops in the middle of the road. I open my window to look out and he does not give me any way. I then notice they are 2 'heavy' undercover police officers in full active duty uniform (could even be armed, they definitely did not look like your average beat neighbourhood bobby) in the car staring at me (they did not flash their lights, just staring). I tell them 'road ahead is closed', then they say "I guess I will turn around then". They give me very aggressive stares and make me reverse a bit, then give me some way to pass through.

Is there a punishment for "Road Closed - Access Only?" or something? Or were they waiting to see if I was going to cross the "Road Closed" sign and then flash the lights and pull me over.

Should I go back and take pictures of the area in case they try to prosecute me? I did not pass the "Road Closed Sign", only the "Road Closed - Access Only".

There's also the issue of whether the sign was a proper regulatory sign (which is legally enforceable), or simply one of those square information signs (which you could safely ignore).

Because you've not read the FAQ on how to I suspect. You need to use an external host.

That looks like a sign covered by the "other temporary signs" provision in Part 9 here http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/schedule/13/made

It is not an offence to ignore such a sign as far as I can tell, it's not a regulatory sign, it just conveys information.
