Hello
I have noticed numerous average speed cameras (SPECS) being installed from Heston all the way to Junction 2 on the M4 Eastbound, same heading West along the elevated section. Does anybody know why they are being installed and whether they are live yet? There are no signs to indicate any average speed at any point along the route, they have them placed at each overhead gantry also, but unless you are looking for them they are very difficult to spot. Regards |

Looking at the Highways England "Improvements and Major Road Projects" pages (more specifically http://roads.highways.gov.uk/projects/m4-j...smart-motorway/), I'd guess they're being put in as part of the "enabling works" for the upgrade of Junctions 3-12 to Smart Motorway.
Alternatively, it could simply be a case of them planning to enforce the 40mph speed limit on the elevated section. |

No signs required indicating they are live. If no reduced speed limit displayed, contrary to the law on the interweb, they can be used to police NSL. Alternatively, it could simply be a case of them planning to enforce the 40mph speed limit on the elevated section. They start at Heston going Eastbound which is 60 mph then down to 40mph as you make your way onto the elevated section, also on the west bound journey. Regards There are no signs to indicate any average speed at any point along the route, they have them placed at each overhead gantry also, but unless you are looking for them they are very difficult to spot. Thanks There has been no media coverage regarding there installation or use, from what I have read on other threads, there is usually some form of warning that a particular route will be used as part of an average speed measuring system. I cannot find any information regarding them anywhere.. How long does it take for SPECS to go live, they were only put up about a week or so ago. Regards |

Noticed these cameras yesterday too.
I personally believe that they are not turned on, otherwise there would be signs. Regards |

I personally believe that they are not turned on, otherwise there would be signs. As PeterG correctly stated in post #3, no signs are required to state the cameras are live. Every average speed camera I have ever come across has always said the area is an average speed check area. I find it extremely hard to believe that it is not a requirement. |

Well it absolutely is not a requirement however hard you find that to believe.
Why would it be? the law is quite clear on the speed limit, do you need a sign up telling you not commit a murder or a burglary in case you get caught? -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

Nevertheless, signage will probably appear.
But the only sure fire way of not being caught is to obey the limit -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

Hi all
Average speed check signs, have now began to appear along the Eastbound section of the M4 just before Osterley. I haven't seen any on the Eastbound section as yet, although it is probable that they too will appear within the next few days. There is still no information as to whether they are live or not, the fact that the average speed signs are now going up, would suggest that they are not live as yet, but will be pretty soon. I can confirm they ARE now live. I've just received one for travelling east between the M4 (Nr grand union canal) and Clayponds avenue. 50mph in a 40 limit.
