Hi, I'm new here. I found this forum whilst looking for advice on a PPC I received back in May.

I had parked along a road where free parking is typically available. On the opposite side of said road is a small B&B with parking space for about 2 or 3 cars. The private parking sign for this car park is on the same side of the road as where my car was parked. On this occasion, my car was parked in front of the car park sign and there were other cars parked behind mine. I returned to my car several hours later to find I'd been issued a ticket even though my car wasn't even in the car park!

The ticket stated that I'd failed to display a valid permit and that is why I'd been charged but again, the sign made it clear that it was referring to the car park, and not the road opposite (where other cars were also parked and had not received tickets). It is also worth noting that I'd parked along that same stretch of road before and not received tickets, though this was the first time I'd parked in front of the sign rather than behind it.

Anyway, I ignored this, but started getting debt collector letters through my door recently. The original ticket asked for £60, but now the debt collectors they've forwarded my details to are asking for £160. I have been looking into this and from what I can determine, these can usually be ignored as they have no real legal recourse, but I've also read elsewhere that it's worth preparing an appeal letter to contest the fine.

At this stage, I have not contacted the debt collector company and do not wish to unless I have no other choice. As before, I was parked on a public road where other cars were also parked, and I was OPPOSITE the car park in question, so I don't see how I've done anything to incur a penalty. I'd be extremely grateful for any advice on how to effectively deal with this matter.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Google Street View link may be useful.

Which PPC?

--------------------
RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver
PoFA=Protection of Freedoms Act, SAC=Safety Awareness Course, NIP=Notice of Intended Prosecution, ADR=Alternative Dispute Resolution
PPC=Private Parking Company, LBCCC=Letter Before County Court Claim, PII=Personally Identifiable Information

Private Parking - remember, they just want your money and will say almost anything to get it.

They're called Secure A Space. Street View link below:

I was parked just where that sign is, a little bit in front of where that blue car is situated. The car park the sign refers to is on the opposite side of the road.

What makes you believe that the sign is referring to the car park? There are other similar signs further up the road at regular intervals, so I would suppose that this is a private road.
No suggesting paying, of course, just don't assume.

You could be right. I did wonder if maybe that was the case. I'd parked before the sign many times before and didn't get any tickets so there is a chance i coudl've misunderstood.

That said, the sign does clearly state that it is referring to a car park. I'll try and upload a picture of it later if possible.

As promised, here is a picture of the sign. As you can see, it clearly references a car park and not the road. If it was referring to the road, then the sign is, at the very least incredibly unclear, especially as it is situated opposite an actual car park!
